That rather depends on the quality of the roll(Rolls from a plant Baker or Rolls from a village Baker. Village Baker every time) There are also different bacons. Back , streaky, smoked or un-smoked

Also, and this isn't fake news sadly, there are heathens out there who put red sauce on a bacon roll, thus rendering it inedible.

Sickening, I have no words for those disgusting sub-humans.
Somebody hold me. I'm cold and I'm frightened.

Bacon rolls a pretty difficult thing get wrong. Andrew There are four elements at play here, the roll, the bacon, the butter and the sauce. You don't want three perfect elements but no barm, or a great barm with sunflower spread and red sauce. The question of how you like your bacon is up there with how you like your steak too, to everyone, there are a smorgasbord of wrong answers. The bacon roll is....well I want to say easy to learn, hard to master but it doesn't fit. But I just did. So whatever.

I am constantly berating the kids for calling ketchup/tomato sauce red sauce. If you want bbq sauce, do you ask for brown sauce? Why not, it's brown! If you want mayo do you ask for white sauce? Isn't it weird how as you get older the most ridiculous things upset you!!

I find it quaint that some places still have a meat option on the menu

I like ketchup with bacon rolls, I also like brown sauce - depends on my mood!
You need a good quality roll, I am not too fussed about spread as don't normally eat marge/butter but the bacon needs to be well cooked, no flabby fat, any fat needs to be crisp.

But brown sauce (HP / Daddies) is called brown sauce because it's brown, so it would be a bit strange to ask for brown sauce if you wanted barbecue sauce, because you would probably get the wrong type.

Basics; Brown sauce for bacon. Red sauce for sausages when served in a roll. Brown or red sauce for sausages or bacon when served on a plate with other food. Simple. Oh, and no butter or spread on a soft roll, but may be acceptable if on a hard roll and under no circumstances should bacon be served in brioche or bagel type buns.

French stick and bacon - by far my preferred option (with ketchup of course!)

Haha...85 in spirit but not yet in body! Your bbq/brown sauce point is perhaps a fair one. Brown sauce doesn't taste of a particular ingredient, and calling it tomato, date and tamarind sauce wouldn't have been that catchy. Tomato sauce, however, is tomato flavoured and made primarily of tomatoes. That's why it is called tomato sauce. My mum never asked me to pass the green sauce when we had roast lamb for Sunday lunch!
