"as someone has already said, support bands seldom seem to make much of an impression. I almost always get to gigs in good time to see them, but I'm blowed if I can think of (m)any that have been any good and/or made it in the their own right later." Read more: cambridgeunitedfc.proboards.com/thread/9148/bands?page=2#ixzz5YTD2QSewI went to a gig in 1989 with Ian Hunter's Mott the Hoople as main act. But I went with a then colleague to see the support act, the Dog’s D’amour – and they were brilliant. We crashed the back stage door and met up with them in a pub off Tottenham Court Road after their set. Tyla collapsed in an alcoholic stupor but Bam was a perfect gent. Saw then again many years later at the Junction: a truly great night. – admittedly not the most musically gifted and live acts depended a great deal on levels of intoxication, but when they got it right, they took a lot of beating.

The logical next step from the earlier 'support bands are hardly ever any good' comment must surely be a thread on the WORST band you've ever seen. My nomination dates from 1989 and an all-day indie festival at the Hummingbird in Birmingham. Whilst kit was removed and set up in between bands we were 'entertained' by Brian's Mother , a three-piece consisting of Jon Fat Beast (Carter USM compere and lighting roadie) on vocals , another roadie on bass and some woman on electric violin. Their "act" went like this........ "Good evening Birmingham! We are Brian's Mother and this is our new single! It's called.......Wild Thing!!!" ..........followed by the worst cover version you've ever heard. "Thank you! You've been a lovely audience! We've got time for one more - this is our new single! It's called .........Wild Thing!" .......and repeat. Again. And again. For THIRTY MINUTES.
They were lucky to get out alive.
I don't think I've ever recovered.......

The worst band I’ve seen, I’m sad to say, was Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Saw them at the first gig of a brief reunion stint in 2010, first show in about 20 years and bloody hell did it sound like it. They were absolutely shambolic and it seemed for all the world they hadn’t done so much as a single, cursory, rehearsal. Less enjoyable than even the most tinpot support or pub acts I’ve seen.

The worst band I have ever seen are The New Rope String Band. I fled mid-performance.
They describe themselves thus: "Once seen, never forgotten: combining superb musicianship with side-splitting comic genius, the New Rope String Band are truly unique entertainers. Elements of circus, clowning, vaudeville, slapstick and sheer inspired silliness are spliced with beautiful acoustic music from various world traditions, in precision-honed yet uproarious performances that have delighted audiences from Borneo's Sarawak rainforest to the Shetland Folk Festival." Hmmm.
Second 'worst', although not that they were bad I just hated every damn minute of it, was a local band who supported Broken Family Band. I won't name them though, just in case former members/friends/relations read this board!

Impressive lists here, some of whom would be on mine too. However, I haven't seen mention of Vinegar Joe or the great Hookfoot from the 70's so they must be mentioned as great live bands.

Hundreds and Hundreds.
Only thinking of one band tonight though.
One who I've been lucky enough to see several times.
THE BUZZCOCKS!
PETE SHELLEY - THE MASTER SONGWRITER.

Thanks scooterboy, after an enjoyable trip down memory lane two things strike me. The first is that I cannot believe that I have never kept a list of the gigs that I went to - I'm sure I must be missing some from here.
The second is that, as someone has already said, support bands seldom seem to make much of an impression. I almost always get to gigs in good time to see them, but I'm blowed if I can think of (m)any that have been any good and/or made it in the their own right later. There is one lot in here that did fairly well for themselves I guess. They used to live quite close to where I was studying in the late 80s/early 90s and get pulled in to support bands at our SU at short notice...
So, covering 1986 to 2018 and throwing up a lot of old local Cambridge(shire)-based bands, I can offer the following: 1000 Yard Stare; 3Head; Beach Blanket Bingo; Beck; Bellowhead; Bicycle Thieves; Blackbeard's Tea Party; Breabach; Broken Family Band; Brooks Williams; Cherry Orchard; Crossland; Cure; Damned; Deftones; Demon Barbers; Depth Charge; Echo and the Bunnymen; Edward II; Eliza Carthy; Ezio; Faith No More; Family Cat; Faustus; Ferocious Dog; Foo Fighters; Gigspanner; Guana Batz; Gweilo; Half Man Half Biscuit; Hans Theessink; Hofman; Home Service; House of Love; Housemartins (first gig, 1986); I Strip 4 couples; InMe; Iron Maiden; Jacob's Mouse; Jamie Smith's Mabon; Jesus and Mary Chain; Jesus Jones; Jim Moray; Johnny Marr; Karine Polwart; Kathryn Tickell; L7; Levellers; Lindisfarne; Lonely; Mallory Knox; Manic Street Preachers (as support, several times); Marilyn Manson; Mawkin; Mega City Four; Megadeath; Megson; Metallica; Ministry; Mogwai; Morrissey; Noble Jacks; Nutmeg; Oysterband; Ozric Tentacles; Placebo; Pop Will Eat Itself; Prodigy; Professor Logik; Rev Hammer; Ride; Robbie Williams; Royal Blood; RURA; Rusty Shackle; Sam Kelly Trio; Seth Lakeman; Skippinish; Spiritualised; Spooky Men's Chorale; Stand; Stereophonics; Steve Knightley; Stone Temple Pilots; Stormed; Sugar; Surfin' Druids; This Replica; Treacherous Orchestra; Willows; Wonderstuff; Young 'Uns. Love the fact that you've seen Jacobs Mouse, Kettlewitch!! The twins in the band (Jebb and Hugo) were really good mates of mine from school days. IIRC, they supported the Manics, not to mention a fledgling Nirvana back in the day.... At the time it felt like Bury was the British Seattle (haha!) Never thought I would see mention of them on this forum - you've made my day! Much man love to Jacobs Mouse here too. I live less than 0.5 miles from the “Fish Shop” and the old Elephant & Castle which is now sadly a funeral directors rather than a pub. Sam from the band has tinkered away on the Bury scene for many years. He was on my friends list on Facebook for a while when he released The Machismos album but I think he binned Facebook rather than me! I think his Mum was school secretary when I was in the 6th form. I flirted with stardom in a school band whose name was a homage to Jacobs Mouse. Ah. Crazy times.

I actually ended up having my wedding reception in the Elephant & Castle (long story there!), which the Mouse twins attended. Never made the connection to the band's album before! Still see Sam about town, as we've both worked in mental health services over the years. Lovely, gentle guy. Good to hear from another Bury-dwelling, Jacob's Mouse-appreciating U. What an exclusive group we are!

What an exclusive group we are! I really treasure those times when, in your mid- to late-teens your local bands were such a huge part of your life. In the grand scheme of things they may now seem like tiddlers, but at the time they really were a defining element in your life. As a sixth former we used to come into Cambridge for pub gigs so often (which with hindsight may explain the A level results) that it really felt like the Burleigh Arms - pre sound limiter - and The Globe (as was) were a home from home. We even ventured to the Rising Sun in Newmarket occasionally... Once the memories of the last time had faded! I feel sorry for those that didn't have that opportunity as the live music scene faded in the late 80s. I was lucky enough to pick it up again in South Wales, which also holds some very fond gig memories.

Saw the Skids at the junction last night, they were great. Richard Jobson still got it, dancing around the stage like a mad man, he has everything that you would want from a frontman.
