Love the fact that you've seen Jacobs Mouse, Kettlewitch!! The twins in the band (Jebb and Hugo) were really good mates of mine from school days. IIRC, they supported the Manics, not to mention a fledgling Nirvana back in the day.... At the time it felt like Bury was the British Seattle (haha!) Never thought I would see mention of them on this forum - you've made my day! Much man love to Jacobs Mouse here too. I live less than 0.5 miles from the “Fish Shop” and the old Elephant & Castle which is now sadly a funeral directors rather than a pub. Sam from the band has tinkered away on the Bury scene for many years. He was on my friends list on Facebook for a while when he released The Machismos album but I think he binned Facebook rather than me! I think his Mum was school secretary when I was in the 6th form. I flirted with stardom in a school band whose name was a homage to Jacobs Mouse. Ah. Crazy times. You'll be pleased to know that you've got a 3rd Jacob's Mouse fan on the forum! I've still got some of the EP's, as well as copies of 'I'm Scared' and 'Rubber Room' Great days.

Yet another big Jacob's Mouse fan in the house - JM + Bivouac at Hull Adelphi sometime in the early 90s remains one of my favourite gigs. Special mention also to World Domination Enterprises, who Jacob's Mouse covered for the Rough Trade Singles Club!

Saw some great local bands last week - Violet Woods, Moonstrips and BansheeVa. If you like 60s, Psych or heavy rock then worth a listen!

The punk gigs at the Corn Exchange were amazing back in the day. SLF particularly stand out.
That Specials gig when there was errm a bit of bovver...
Also used to go to see Dolly Mixture at some pub on Mill Street (possibly) when I was about 16. They were quite fun. Happy talk!
On a slightly different tack, I always go to Womad, have seen some amazing acts there, Gil Scott Heron, Isaac Hayes, Mari Boine, Blind Boys of Alabama being a few that spring to mind.

In Flames last night in Norwich, bloomin' awesome. If you're a KSE fan Howard Jones' new band Light the Torch supported, it's nothing you haven't heard before but a guaranteed decent show.
The other band was Norma Jean, I like it heavy but that really was just white noise.

Dean from Subculture has a new band, electricsoul, who have their first gig on Thursday supporting Freedom Faction and the beat goes on djs. Should be good, old fashioned fun m.facebook.com/events/780060399111907Dean Tyrrell lead guitarist was Netherhall and a Barnwell boy. Didn’t he work in The Beat Goes On, as well? Remember Subculture had a couple of tracks on the Oi albums, one I remember in particular where the bass drum was totally out of sync- Stick Together. Not a patch on the likes of Thirteenth Chime who I knew originally as The Antics(from Haverhill). Dean worked in Parrott Records down Kings Street. Pete Matthews lead singer was Netherhall and a Romsey boy. Subculture also had a single released by Alan McGee (future Oasis manager) a collector's item now if you've got one kicking around your loft!!

Nigel Kimberley made it to Subculture, didn’t he, as drummer?

Sorry to throw Brexit into such an excellent thread but all lovers of live music need to be made aware of what No Deal will mean to an already struggling live music scene. If Boris gets his way and we leave with No Deal then from Nov 1 any artist or band either leaving or entering the UK will have to pay import duty and VAT on all equipment or merchandise BEFORE they cross the border. They will also need a VAT number and an EORI number. How many up and coming UK bands will be able to tour in Europe (and how many European artists will want to come here) if they're charged import duties and VAT before they've earned a penny? Full details in an article on www.rawmusictv.comP.S. Before anyone throws the 'Project Fear' argument at me this is a Government directive lifted straight from the gov.uk website.

So what do they do when touring places outside of the EU, they must pay taxes etc. to do that, so why would touring Europe be completly out? After having met a couple of up and coming bands (Uncle Acid and Skarlett Riot), they feel the biggest problems when trying to carve out a living playing music is the lack of venues, as many in the UK are being closed down, and streaming sites. One of the bands claimed (not sure if it is true, but have no reason to think thay are making it up) that they need people to stream their songs over 5000 times on spotify to make the same as selling one t-shirt. So if people really want to support local/up and coming acts, buy CD's rather than using streaming sites and invest in lots of merch.
Whilst talking of up and coming acts, saw three young bands at the weekend. Amongst phantoms, Beneath the Silence and Aphyxion. Amongst phantoms are a very new act, only together a few months and it showed. They did ok, but have the potential to be much better. Beneath the silence were really good, but not convinced they will ever get much further than the small venues in Denmark. Aphyxion played a blinder (as usual). After having heard a lot of Danish bands, these are the ones I think may be able to make a living out of music. Well worth a listen if you like heavy music.

Thanks for the recommendation; based on a 30-second preview of each track on Void I think I am going to like them too. Interesting that they are based in Ribe as this is one of Ely's twinned towns. Maybe they would be tempted to do a gig at The Maltings as some form of cultural exchange?!

Because the UK has trade deals and arrangements with other countries which limit or exclude such taxes. BTW it won't just be Europe - a lot of people are blissfully unaware that we have trade deals with 70 other countries based on our EU membership that will also disappear overnight with No Deal. I doubt the likes of U2 will lose much sleep over an increase in their tour expenses but it would be a real barrier for new acts trying to establish themselves and/or widen their fan base. As an oldie I vividly remember Mega City Four returning from a three-month tour of Europe around '89/90 with the princely sum of £200 between the four of them.......and three months back rent to pay. Those were the days.......
