It will cost too much to tackle climate change. This is why people choose to ignore the elephant in the room.

"Nobody nowadays (apart from a handful in the lunatic fringe of the Republican Party) would seriously claim that giving women the vote was a terrible idea"
Correct. However letting them have licences to drive is a different matter entirely.

That really is very thoughtful of you but being happily married, it really isn’t necessary.
I will thank you anyway but politely decline your kind offer.

So the action is off: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-48652840Probably best. At least XR members can now jet off on their summer holidays, New York shopping trips, Tuscan wine-tasting weekends and climbs of Kilimanjaro without disruption.

Awww, jimbo8082 has deleted his post.
The wife is away at a conference for a couple of days this week so I was considering taking him up on his offer.

Ha, yes, I do normally go along for a few expenses-paid days sightseeing (it would be rude not to) but did in fact decline this one. As much as I love Manchester, the spice zombies of Piccadilly Gardens do tend to take the edge off an evening stroll. I tend to prefer the carbon footprint heavy jaunts myself.
To bring this back though to the environment/XR, I’m always amazed how companies and organisations jet people all over the place with little concern of the environmental consequences. Applying pressure to high-profile companies and organisations might be quite effective and have a beneficial trickle down effect. It would also be more palatable to the general public who feel quite angry - Ryanair/EasyJet etc have given more affordable travel opportunities to many on more modest incomes, but it does seem unfair those people would be the first to suffer with punitive taxation and legislation. It is no wonder XR gets accused of double standards when “activists” such as Oscar-winning, multi-millionairess Emma Thompson sneerily tell us she “HAS to fly” “because of work” Ok Emma.
It’s kind of why this is fascinating. I have a reluctant admiration for XR and still can’t work out which way this is going to go. XR need to be very, very careful. Clearly they are on to something but the risk they will shoot themselves in the foot is very high indeed. I’ve a suspicion the radicals will ultimately undermine the good work being done which would be a great shame.
Going to be very interesting watching how XR deal with that.

Nobody nowadays (apart from a handful in the lunatic fringe of the Republican Party) would seriously claim that giving women the vote was a terrible idea Really, before women had the vote, Britain was the greatest power in the globe, owning huge chunks of it... now we have the Isle of Wight and that's about it

And here, the details of the latest faux protest: xrcambridge.org/events.htmlSo, on Saturday, driving in Cambridge may be a little difficult as Henrietta, Miles, Henry and Jessica hold their 'reclaim the street' jamboree without the benefit of a) public support, b) any permission whatsoever, and c) any thought to the livelihoods of those owning and operating businesses in the City Centre. The damage is not simply the not very well disguised attempt to blockade the Grand Arcade car park, but actually the genuinely off putting effect of making any sane individual at all wanting to go anywhere near this charade. Our businesses will lose serious money. Meanwhile, the tailbacks caused by this wholly irresponsible and selfish behaviour will just pollute the planet XR claims to care for further. I'm sure Emma Thompson has her private jet fuelled and ready to go for the occasion. There is a simple solution to so-called climate change - stop breeding. It may be more relevant to ask XR members why they believe it is responsible to have 3 or 4 children, all of whom will ultimately drain the World of its natural resources. Here are some depressing statistics showing the true cause of the issues the World now faces: Year 1500: World Population 450 Million Year 1900: 1.6 Billion Year 1971: 3.6 Billion (The year I was born) Year 2000: 6 Billion Year 2019: 7.63 Billion. One doesn't need a degree in rocket science to figure out that the root cause of so many current issues is simple population growth. Rather than blockading public highways to promote their own 'we hate cars' view, perhaps XR needs to start promoting the benefits of maximum one or two child families and contraception.

xrcambridge.org/events.htmlWhat a bunch of wankers: Q. I’d like to join in. Is that possible? A. Everyone is welcome to join! You do not need to be willing to be arrested. Your support can come in many forms, from musicians, performers, and artists to on-the-day helpers and coordinators. If you are not already involved with XR Cambridge drop us a message on Facebook, email info@xrcambridge.org or come along to an open general meeting, one of our talks or an NVDA training. Q. Will this action be child-friendly? A. Streets without cars are more child friendly than streets with cars, so yes! Jesus Christ, roping kids in. Turning this in to some sort of hippy festival fun-day is shameful. “You do not need to be willing to be arrested”. Ha, nice one. It might be nice if they outline the full ramifications of a criminal record to everyone first. Going to be interesting watching people shitting themselves realising they f*cked up their careers with a criminal record. Q. What about emergency vehicles? A. Emergency vehicles will be provided with access. That really is so very generous of you. How lovely of you to assume control over everyone and everything. I’m sure the public as a whole will be very happy to be told they have ceded power to a minority. Indeed, let’s spread the word that it is now XR that decides who uses our streets and how. How foolish to imagine it might be the police and local authorities that decide these things. The emergency services will be eternally grateful you have granted them access. And thank you for your thoughtfulness with the heads-up on the dates. I will toast the glorious martyrs of XR from an Italian sunlounger on Saturday, and will be sure to book a carbon-footprinted XR-avoiding break for the next event too. Enjoy your fun day, be brave, be true. What could possibly go wrong...... x

So ironic as well that such protests will cause traffic chaos and ultimately more pollution will be created from cars stuck and shuffling round town, than what would have been generated on a normal Saturday. Good thinking chaps.

Such small minded views. It's a shame the bigger picture can't be seen and you're angry at the wrong people. But I guess being able to get to town is more important.
