What a great interview and you can see what it means to him. Really happy for Yearn and sure he will get more chances this year.

Chance to see the kids, they say - so presumably you have watched the guys play in the invitational cup over the years, been to St Neots & used to watch CRC?
Horseshit. Delighted for Yearn but that’s it.

Delighted for Yearn but that’s it. A little bit of me does feel hypocritical in that United fielded kids in an adult league as CRC, however IIRC we were a non-league team ourselves in those days and other clubs also fielded ‘A’ teams. I watched CRC a few times but will NEVER watch us play a cup game in a competition that welcomes Premier League U21s on an equal footing. Used to love the old LDV cup, but not been to a single game since the new format was introduced. Happy for Yearn, but let’s not forget that Ade Azeez scored for fun in this thing too, so it’s not all that.

Naturally, I’m pleased for the youngsters and particularly Yearn. Nevertheless, I have little intention of watching games in the EFL Trophy in its current format. At the time U23 teams were introduced, the alleged purpose was to give (primarily) Premier League academy players the opportunity to play competitive games against “men’s” teams. They even configured the rules so that the L1 and L2 teams had to field a certain number of players who had played in the previous game or (rather oddly) would play in the next game. The whole thing was a nonsense and, judging by last night’s team selections the rule must have been dropped or at least watered down. Does playing against teams consisting largely of squad players and youngsters really help the development of PL “starlets”?
The original knock-out version of the competition wasn’t very well attended, but crowds were higher than those for the inaugural group games following the introduction of the U23 teams. So, it was then decided to fix the groups with contrived local derbies in the hope of boosting attendances. Of course, both the group format and contrived derbies could have been introduced without the inclusion of U23 teams and the whole “boycott” issue would never have happened.
And, of course, the prize money is little more than a bribe. How can it be justified that the prize money is higher than that for the League Cup? It’s bizarre.

Bennett is definitely good enough to be a regular on the bench. How about Yearn as an impact sub in the next few games?

The problem is if we play just Ironside up top..You're going to have a few disgruntled players if Yearn is coming on ahead of Smith and Knibbs (Irrespective of form)

Does anyone know/can be arsed to count how many passes were in the foreplay that led to our fourth goal?

I used to enjoy watching CRC. Whatever you say about Jez he managed to vibe that team incredibly well and I don't recall such a level of interest being taken in the youth team before.
Gave us a fair few players through too (Robbie, Hughes, Josh, Marriott, Luke, Rory...technically Rimpson, Simpson and Mash worked their way through the same youth system even though it belonged to City at the time)
It's 15-16 years since Howard and Jez London Bridged City's youth system to the Abbey and hopefully it's fully in its stride and with its own identity now to start chucking through some quality players (though interestingly Jobe and Bennett have only been with us since 16 or so rather than us under 9's. It's a credit to our scouting system that we're snaffling young local players)
Hopefully now we're a more attractive proposition and can demonstrate we provide a route to the first team we can hold on to the better players rather than lose them to Chelsea and Sp*rs, but I guess it's always going to dificult once heads are turned.

1,390 attendance - with 1,257 Cambridge fans - is shockingly high. What’s going on? People enjoying going to see live football again? The attendance was a lot higher than expected and together with the early kick off seemed to have caught a lot of people out. At kick off there were still queues back onto Newmarket Road from the two main stand turnstiles that were open, although they did then reopen the third one (which had been open but then closed again) as well as letting people through the main gate to the car park.

Only 500 more showed up for the Swindon game which is disappointing. The difference in cost was probably a factor but I can't help feeling the league cup has become a bit of a distraction over the years.
