Really poor pitch for test cricket. It is supposed to be a five day game, rather than be a two or three at best game. Having said that apart from Root and Stokes we do have a lot of batsmen with poor technique, bad decision making and clearly out of form/practice. Doesn't help when you send your best players home mid series, and bring others in from the winter in England. And selected the wrong team. Perhaps they only considered the pink ball and not the pitch itself. Agree. India are the better side, but pitches like these are bad for Test cricket. This could end in just 2 days and that’s not what this format is about. Also very unfair on spectators who have tickets for days 3 and 4. There really ought to be sanctions for countries that produce under-prepared pitches like these ones.

I like the idea of a day/night test, good for spectators & TV audiences - but the few games England have been involved in have been shambolic & looking down the list there's been hardly any decent contests including other teams.

Well the Indian authorities dropped the fifth test a while back, in lieu of more white ball rubbish instead. Maybe we can play that now, on Saturday say?
Rotation.....white ball cricket.....IPL money. Take ya pick. I read a stat quite recently that in the last five years a test match lasts on average 10 sessions. I didn't think it was even that long!
Finally, it feels like DRS is completely taking over test matches these days and becomes the main focus of the spectacle in itself. Just about every upper order wicket is reviewed(by the batsmen) and yet eg Root and Kohli are both s hit at it.
Finally, finally, oh for a crowd eh although I see a second wave of CV is about to hit India.

That was a mad game. Obviously delighted that India won but absurd that a test match can be over in less than 2 days. I suppose the damage was done by England failing to capitalise on winning the toss. I was seriously worried this morning though! Wonder if England will be able to come back mentally next week. You can get your own back this summer though by preparing wickets for Anderson and Broad.
Agree about the lack of any kind of distancing in the crowd-crazy.

The crowd was scary, and to have so much space available as well. Mad times for such behaviour. I guess ultimately, is down to the hosts to decide what pitches they will prepare. However, money does talk, so will be interesting to see how it plays out long term. Do you have a very successful home side, that is viewed by fewer people over fewer days, resulting in less income, or accept a few losses for the higher views/$ , with better pitches? Not taking anything away mind, England were poor...but as quoted on the box ,Root is not 5 for 8 runs bowler !

As I said in a previous post: "I get that all countries are allowed to prepare a pitch to suit their needs, but if that was a county ground in England, the home team would have been fined for preparing a sub standard surface." Perhaps in these days of test match league tables, the ICC should be inspecting wickets like this one and deducting points for sub standard pitches? It's funny how the IPL pitches seem to be prepared to allow runs to be scored, isn't it!

Well they seem to have some roads to play on there and score heavily.
If I remember correctly on the last tour an Indian in his 2nd or 3rd test scored 300, can't imagine any team doing that on this pitch.
It was taking sharp turn and going through the surface early on day one, when normally late on day three or day four.
What a fantastic stadium though. Shame they felt the need to produce such a pitch. Think of the outcry if that happened in England or Australia. I know over here we have difficult overhead conditions sometimes, but that's the way it is. Atleast the pitch is good offering a balence between bat and ball

Finally, finally, oh for a crowd eh although I see a second wave of CV is about to hit India. It can seem that way but remember that each team has got an extra review to ‘make up’ for the home umpires (COVID travel restrictions). Once things revert to the old format of umpires being from the Elite panel and not from the home nation, I would expect 2 reviews each. Then you need to be much more careful with how you use them. I hope the ICC sanction India. That pitch was not suitable for test cricket (although there is no doubting it was gripping for the neutral). As a minimum, a test match should last 4 days if the two teams are evenly matched. The problem is the ICC and the BCCI are basically the same thing. India control world cricket. We can’t totally blame the pitch though. England were poor mainly with the bat and should’ve picked Bess in place of one of the seamers. It’s easy to look at things with hindsight though. At least the groundsman has plenty of time to prepare a decent strip for the final test. England need to have a few days to reflect and learn.

Great stat from the last couple of days - the last test accrued 387 runs in 142 overs over 4 innings; in the Australia/NZ 20/20 match on Wednesday, 434 runs were scored in 40 overs!

Blimey. And 17 wickets fell in 275 balls yesterday in Ahmedabad.

Small crumb of comfort - Bumrah has left the bubble for personal reasons and won’t play in the final test. It probably won’t matter if it’s a massive turner anyway but nevertheless, he is world class.

Losing Bumrah will have little impact.

I thought for a moment there Bairstow/Stokes was going to be the real deal.

What do we think about the team selection for this match? A bit of panic I think after the last two batting debacles. Going in with only Jimmy as a pace option - Ben Stokes has only bowled 18 overs in the series so far, so cannot be considered to be a fast bowling option for more than a few overs; Leach and Bess are going to have a lot on their shoulders to allow us to bowl India out twice; I suspect Capt Joe will be bowling quite a few overs in this match!
