Cheerio Smith... So far, so very very good today! That was quite close to dissent when he was given out, chuntering away all the way back to his changing room. Would live to have been a fly on the wall when he got there. Big afternoon ahead!

I don't mind Smith these days but he was also gesturing that it was too high as soon as he was hit which seems a little unsportsmanlike to me.
Not sure about the declaration yesterday. Obviously a wicket in those overs would have made it seem a good move but on day one to voluntarily surrender one of the world's best batters seemed a little foolish.
Stokes' batting continues to be a concern. Not sold on his captaincy either.

Fair play to the Aussie operner. He has held their innings together. Love bazball but equally love the contrast of style.
Missed stumping highlights my concern that for me Foakes should have been playing. Bairstow is one of our best six batters so should be playing. Stokes can open and for me the battle should be between Duckett and Crawley.
Can't help feeling we have missed a point of difference in the attack which maybe Wood would have bought. Do you need Jimmy and Broady in the same team? I doubt either will be able to play all five tests.

I guess it was a show of intent, having them.both play in the opening test. I have no doubt one or the other will be rested for the upcoming tests and Wood will get his chance.
I am so conflicted about Bairstow; definitely need him in the team, but where, as Foakes needs to come back as the wicket keeper. Crawley justified his selection in the first innings, Duckett is starting to establish himself as a test match opener, so I don't see that changing in this series. Pope, Root, Brook and Stokes are all shoe ins. Maybe drop Moeen and use Root as the primary spin option, although I accept that really isn't ideal.

Drop Stokes, make him assistant coach and bring Foakes in.

A game of 'what might have beens'
What it has done is demonstrate that the teams are very evenly matched, albeit each with a very different ethos. Fascinating summer ahead.

We would have lost 5-0 a year ago. We still might but it'll be a good watch.

I'm not sure we would have won that match today from the position they were in when Cummins came to the crease. 72 needed with 3 wickets left? Can't see our last 3 wickets knocking that many off.

I thought Australia were always favourites from the start of their second innings other than when we got the eighth wicket.
That expensive Root over probably turned tide. So now we look back on some brave choices and wonder whether they turned out to be foolhardy on contact with quality players and difficult situations.
Can Stokes manage the game as captain if objective is to win? Do they still want to win at all costs? Can Stokes bat or bowl? Should we play the best keeper? Should our frontline spinner be able to bowl long spells for two days? Should our frontline spinner be Joe Root?

Not been to either in person, but the difference in atmosphere between Edgbaston and Lords is something else.
But then maybe a day like today just does that people.
And yes, I would birch anyone who judged a football atmosphere on how it sounds on the radio but at least I'm owning the hypocrisy.

I quite like the novelty of Lords, the hubbub buzz noise you get on the radio is unique and we don't need 5 football terrace atmospheres. No grounds north of Nottingham in the next Ashes is a disgrace though. Rose Bowl doesn't deserve an ashes test. Got tickets to Headingley and Old Trafford so it's a shame there's likely to be not much to play for by then.
