Yeah you're right.
With this management I think they may say well let's just pick our best seven batters. And figure out the order after. Maybe that. Crawley wasn't an opener for Kent but was brought in there for England. At this stage I wouldn't mind too much who we opened with but obv Australia will be a different test.

You cannot drop Foakes ahead of Crawley. Bairstow straight in for Crawley surely. Assuming Bairstow's back. The side v Ireland on 1 June will presumably reveal all.
Should be tickets available soon for non-members at the WTC final at the Oval too.

I got an email last week about WTC tickets being available I think because I entered Oval ballot for Ashes tickets but didn't get them. Got some for day 5 at Edgbaston but chance of no play of course. Going to day 3 of the Ireland test hoping there's still some action.

Wow. That was a breathless ride last night. Don’t begrudge NZ their victory. Just great to watch such high class entertainment. This England team is the future of Test cricket, I hope. Long live the long format of the game.

Shot ourselves in the foot with Root running out Brooks. Would probably have got there otherwise, although no guarantees.

Foakes dropped for the Ireland test and likely the Ashes. Bairstow back in.
Seems very harsh on Foakes, especially when his batting average under Stokes is better than Crawley and Pope, having a good start to the county season, and his wicket keeping is top notch.

It is very harsh as he's done very little wrong. The continued picking of Crawley bring's into question Rob Key's impartiality for me given he's good mates with his dad. I would have dropped Crawley personally.

They can't not bring Bairstow back, he was by far and away the most positive attacking batsman before his injury and plays the game in exactly the way that McCallum and Stokes want. If Brook hadn't been so successful in his tests so far, he would have had that place, but I suppose we should be grateful at his emergence.
It is incredibly unfair on Foakes, but other than letting Bairstow open the batting instead of Crawley (which wouldn't be a great idea if we wanted to use him to his full potential in the middle of an innings with tired bowlers and an old ball), there is no other obvious place for him.

The other way that's been suggested to fit them all in, which isn't ideal either is to drop Crawley and bring Bairstow back but make Stokes open. It's not ideal but at the same time Foakes is out performing the players that are getting picked over him. He's the the better wicket keeper and averages better than the specialist bats at county level. Do you take your best wicket keeper or try and fit in another class batsman.

Incredibly harsh on Foakes. Why Crawley wasn’t dropped I have no idea. How many chances is the guy going to get? I know we don’t have a natural opener to replace Crawley but I think you could put any of Pope, Bairstow or Stokes there and they’d do a decent job - certainly better than Crawley! Foakes is that good behind the stumps that you could easily sneak an extra wicket in a match that may not have been taken otherwise.
Shame about Archer’s injury. So much talent but his body is letting him down. You’d have to really question whether he can cut it in tests in the future.

Disaster not to drop Crawley and will this situation do anything other than put more pressure on him? I don't think he can handle it, just as I don't think he'll be able to handle Starc.
I'd have opened Bairstow or Stokes. Stokes is a walking wicket anyway these days and I wouldn't trust him to bat with the tail the way Foakes has, particularly as he feels he needs to set the tone by batting like a bad Mal Loye. The whole world knows what the tone is by now.
Or, we could drop Stokes, he could be a cheerleader like Beckham at the world cup and someone else could come in to get 25 caught at mid on and bowl an over of bouncers.

I agree with Stokes opening although I think it’d be a bit feast or famine. It’d be entertaining for sure. There’s no doubt he’s a quality player but without his bowling, does he bring much to the table apart from his captaincy? His batting hasn’t been at the level required for some time in tests unless I’m imagining things but he’s always got a crucial innings in his locker.
I’m not for one moment suggesting dropping him as I think he’s essential to motivate the players and provide that spark on the field tactically. I do think his ‘all-rounder’ status needs to be questioned and maybe he needs to be the fall guy and move around the order to plug the gaps in order to keep stability in the batting order.
Crawley averages low 30s in first class cricket. He’s clearly talented striking the ball but has too many weaknesses especially to the swinging ball against top class bowlers. I can’t see his average improving dramatically. For me, he’s not good enough. At the very least, he should play a season in county cricket to prove he’s good enough to at least be knocking on the door of the selector’s office.

There's something comforting about a batting collapse so swiftly.
