Awful 2 days for England after such a good day on day 2. Massive hammering in this test

Terrible result. Why can’t the players adapt in game? Surely it’s not just Bazball or not for the match? You have to change the tempo and risk depending on the game situation. And heaven forbid, play for a draw if push comes to shove! Joe Root needs to play his game rather than the team game. He is the anchor to the innings but is woefully out of form.
A big two tests coming up. India are better than us especially in their conditions. The manner of the collapse is worrying though.

Not Roots finest match thats for sure along with the drop of Rohit on the first morning. He needs to play his own game when batting and play the situation better. Bairstow surely has to be dropped as well. Looks completely out of sorts

I’m basically just going to repeat what I was saying throughout The Ashes, I love that Plan A is to play positive, aggressive cricket. Love it. However, it’s a five day game and you have to adapt your style and plans to the match situation, fail to do so and you’ll fail to win test matches.

It was a bit of a jolt to the system. Good toss to win? Maybe, but I do think India batted much better.
Duckett's run out was a bit of a scene setter, followed shortly afterwards by that closest of Umpire's calls for Crawley to be given out. That brought about the return to a, familiar of past days, collapse of the batting line up. The fact that Mark Wood scored 33 at the end of the innings and no one else got above 20 is quite damning, almost as if the rest of the batting recognised that this was by far a total they would never get near to and didn't want to or couldn't bat out the time for a draw.
I heard one of the commentators discussing 'Bazball' during the game and trying to define what it was. A widely held view has been that it was about playing aggressive attacking cricket, both with bat and ball, which has worked well over the past 2 years. The alternative view that was put forward was that it was a style of play that encouraged a player to play in a way that freed him up to be expressive and in his natural style.
Without a doubt, that has benefitted the likes of Duckett, Crawley, Pope, but I have to say, it is ruining Joe Root. He seems to be trying to improvise more than playing his natural game - the way he was out in the first innings, attempting a reverse paddle sweep to Bumrah and getting caught in the slips was embarrassing and excruciating. If ever there was a player who was made to bat long and drag the team towards a draw in the last test, it was him, but he seems to have been taken along by the Bazball tide and is a shadow of his former self.

Bumrah being rested for the 4th test, which will definitely weaken India. We must use common sense though. England keep banging on about how they’re not driven by results etc but that’s what they’re going to be judged on whether they like it or not.
Was a great knock by Duckett, but it counts for nothing if you then go on and get hammered like we were. Knowing when to sit in and soak up pressure is in no way boring or negative for those of us who have been fans of Test cricket for years. Some of Stokes’ best knocks have come after he’s been 15 from 100 or whatever and then accelerated.
Very few better batters than Root when he’s in full flow and playing properly. He’s got all the shots and doesn’t need to be playing the ramp that early in his innings.
India are vulnerable, but we must put a first innings score together to stand any chance in the remaining 2 tests. Expect we will stick with Bairstow but i would move him down to number 6 and have Stokes at 5.

Excellent knock by Root today. Was only able to dip in and out of the coverage, but it was actually refreshing to see traditional Test Match Cricket. Proper battle between bat and ball. Sensible innings by Foakes and decent lower order knock from Robinson, so far. 350+ should be a decent 1st inns score on that pitch.

Much more what we should be seeing, Root looked so much more comfortable today. Play the conditions - not just the pitch, but also the test series - we need a win, going hell for leather on a dodgy track is not the way to do that.

In the blink of an eye - there goes the series. Following the exact pattern of the last time we toured there at the moment. Disappointing after such a promising start. Not all over yet, but India are normally ruthless when the winning line is in sight.

The frustrating thing for me is we had this test in our control, with India 7 wickets down midway between tea and close of play on the second day. They were 176 behind at that stage, but managed to get that deficit down to 46 by the end of that innings. All the pundits have pointed to England's poor second innings, but for me, the turning point in that game came when those last 3 wickets gathered so many runs. If they had been asked to chase 250 instead of 190, we would have won that game.

Another huge defeat and batting collapse. Disapointing tour with the only positive the emergence of Hartley & Bashir. Stokes personal performance very poor hardly contributing with the bat. One of Two need moving on for some fresh faces in the summer.

I find it interesting that now things have gone quite badly wrong, that this is the first time that Bazball has been challenged. We all knew that it was a bold move to try to play that way in India, the home of 20/20 cricket, where quite bizarrely, they showed in the 1st Test that they do appreciate the virtues of the long form of the game, despite their prowess at the shorter form. Until of course we won that test, which gave them the chance to blood a couple of younger players who have been brought up biffing the ball about and did just that to secure a comfortable series win.
Before the last game, Stokes was clear that the players were focused on winning the game, minds were not on the journey home. Didn't look much like that when we collapsed in the first innings! Bairstow and Root burned two appeals, which were so 'out' it was scandalous - almost as if they were saying 'I'm a top batsman, I can't possibly be out!' Bairstow in particular seemed to think that he had a divine right to a big score on his 100th appearance. Talk of a reset could see him as one of the most vulnerable when Harry Brook is available again in the summer. I also wonder whether now Jimmy has claimed his 700th wicket, if he will now gracefully step down from the international scene; last year at home was a very average season for him, I'm not sure, great as he has been, we have a place for a 41 year old anymore. Time for the younger breed to step up now, there are plenty waiting in the wings.
Bigger picture though is how we go forward from here as a team - do we maintain the same ethos and attack every game? I think they will personally, the criticism will bounce off McCallum and Stokes and it could be argued that with West Indies and Sri Lanka visiting for Test matches this year, against weaker opposition it could be an exciting and victorious summer.
