Interesting to hear Joe Root's view on over rates, especially as he was a captain not so long ago, who couldn't get his bowlers through 90 overs in a day's play!
On whether more could be done to get play: "It doesn't get dark here in England until 10pm in the summer, why can't we just play until we bowl the overs? There's been a lot of chat about not bowling the overs. There are so many different ways of trying to find opportunities to get as much play in as possible.
I do agree with his first point (although probably not as late as 10.00!), why do they come off the field at 6.30 when the weather is still fine for play if there are overs left to bowl. I can't think of any other sport where time dictates when the game will finish. Imagine being at a football match and the play finishes at 5.00 because stoppages have caused a delay, so only 85 minutes is played instead of the full 90!

This is the best big man little man partnership up front for England since Crouch and Defoe.

Batting is looking far too easy for the Aussies today, can't see us forcing 10 wickets to bowl them out. It may be the weather that saves us this time!
I found it a little strange (and more than a little self indulgent) for Broad to announce his retirement half way through a match. It has the feeling of someone who want the adulation of a crowd for the remaining 2 days of the series. I also wonder if he has stolen Jimmy's thunder a bit, surely he will retire at the end of the series too, this has been his leanest series since he first broke into the team, and it seems quite obvious that his age has caught up with him.

Jimmy has already announced he's staying on, and was number 1 bowler in the world only this winter. There's a chance he's fallen off a cliff but I don't think it's necessarily the case - the pitches Headingley aside have been pretty placid but his pace has been normal.

Jimmy doesn't rely on the pitch for his wickets, its movement through the air that has gotten him most of his wickets. He has still had that swing through the air this year, but his powers have definitely diminished, understandably given his age.
He may well want to continue, but I doubt he will fancy a tour of India, and by next season at home he may well find himself out of the picture with the other fast bowlers we have available, including Robinson, Tongue, Stone, Potts and Mahmood, as well as Woakes and Wood who have done so well this series.

He was excellent last time in India given nothing was in his favour and Stokes will want his experience and knowledge of conditions even if he just plays a couple of games. The reliance on swing is something massively overplayed especially in this career renaissance period when he's arguably been at his peak up until this series which is mad at 37/38/39 and averaging 22ish. Like I said you might be right and it could be a sudden drop off but given he was top class in the previous 6 to 12 months means I'm less hasty to jump to that conclusion. One bad series isn't enough to write him off otherwise Broad would have gone 5 years ago when it looked like he had lost his skill before reinventing himself. Broad will surely move to Sky but I can see Jimmy sticking around the squad as bowling coach and occasional media gigs alongside his podcast.

The day has started well, lets hope the weather allows the game to be played to a conclusion!

Some series that, shame about the Manchester rain!
A lot of people doubted that Bazball would work against the Aussies, well I think we have seen that it doesn't matter who we are playing, we have players who are brave enough to be positive. My only caveat to that is I do think we have tempered it a little during the series, going 2 down I saw a slight change in mindset. led by Stokes himself in the first innings at Headingley, playing sensibly to the situation of the game, before earning the right to go back on the offensive.

Great series, every game thrilling and a great advert for the game.
As for Broad, a six off his final ball he faced and a wicket off his final ball delivered. If Carlsberg did send offs...

This is exactly it, Bazball is a perfectly reasonable plan A and it’s great that plan A is to play positive aggressive cricket. However it can’t be forgotten that in a five day test match, you have to be flexible enough to adapt your approach to the situation and the failure to do that really cost us in the first two games. Regardless it’s still been an excellent series and it’s a real shame that the Manchester washout deprived us all of this last test being an epic winner takes all showdown.

Cricket isn't really my thing these days, but we should really be beating Afghanistan, shouldn't we?
