Burnley won the 2nd tier that year, no? So they did. Was misremembering it. Was a long time ago. I do recall really wanting to play them as they were a top team. It was all far more daunting and dare I say more exciting back then. We were often playing at new grounds. Have to remember we had only been in the EFL 3 years and were the new kids on the block.

Of course, and at that point they would have won the 1st division title a decade or so earlier, so certainly no small fry at all. Enjoyed reading that, thank you.

I was there and was involved in my first ever pitch invasion when Terry Eades equalised. Yep, I was there too Shubs, remember going into the Main Stand (half the size then) via Cut Throat Lane with my Dad....and Terry Eades goal too ....think the CEN carried a photo "The Men Who will make History Tomorrow" with Willie Watson at the front the previous day! " Happy Times....inc the Half Time Mars Bar being the size of a Brick !!

When I was young mine was half the size of a Mars bar, it's the full size of one now.

Those were the days. 3 day week, rail strikes, OPEC and rationing at the pump and so many other things. The ban on use of floodlight to conserve electricity supply led to the morning kick off. Also had to buy a match program for entry to get over some silly events rules. Great match. We played the second replay at a neutral ground. That was back when a draw meant something and in a very British way could only be settled be multiple replays. Those Oldham matches were huge at the time. After the draw at the Abbey we knew we would play Burnley in the 4th round if we could beat Oldham. Oldham were pretty much the best team in the 3rd division at the time and we were struggling to stay up in our first ever season in the 3rd tier. We got relegated that season but would have been awesome to have played Burnley in the FA cup 4th round. Would have been our biggest ever match by far had we beaten Oldham. Burnley I think took the 1st division title that season so that is similar to drawing Man City now. It wasn't event rules, it was the Sunday trading laws, in those days very little was allowed to trade on the Sabbath! Seems hard to believe these days!

Spent part of that night in some bar where they just played cheesy tunes and two of my mates (one of whom had just been to his first Cambridge game) was inserting ‘Mark Bonner’ into every song as often as possible, giving rise to a tune we still sing now - ‘the best thing about being Mark Bonner, is the prerogative to win away from home… oh, oh, oh, totally crazy, forget I’m a lady etc… man, I feel like Mark Bonner’.
You had to be there.
Makes me sad now. I miss Mark Bonner.

It has crossed my mind, but there are two issues: he wouldn’t answer, and if he did it’d become awkward the moment I blurted out ‘come back’, like it’s his choice.

"HEAD COACH DEPARTS" What a wonderful, wonderful subheading. I felt a genuine weight lifted when I read that.
