On this day in 2005...we were relegated to the conference.
I'd actually forgotten we had another home game after the Rochdale match where it the inevitable was finally confirmed. On the way to that game the suspension in my car 'collapsed' and left me stranded on the A14. I made it to the game of course but....sigh.
What an awful day. I genuinely thought I'd never get to see my United again.
What a thoroughly bloody marvellous football club we've become. I've never been prouder to support us.

On this day in 2021, our promotion to League One was confirmed. What a difference a day and 16 years can make.

I've just been watching the 2020/21 highlights back to back to back this morning actually. Absolutely amazing.
The promotion celebrations will probably choke me up forever.

Andrew Mullin on the turnstile roof bathed in flare smoke while Wes drinks his pint of Guinness....they weren't just celebrations, they were creating iconic works of art.

I kinda like the novelty of hearing the players celebrate or the coaching staff shout "fucking close him down", but it does sound a bit eaerie and Sunday league, yeah.
Watching the highlights of last last season is lovely way to spend an hour or so, that's for sure.

First time football made me cry 😢 Andrew Remember going to the home game and thinking after drawing 1-1 it's going to be a tricky ask. I also remember not being able to go to the away game as had school the next day and listening to the radio whilst having a bath as goal after goal went in against us. That was also the day I realised that football could be cruel having being spoilt for the first 3 years of being a U's fan. Certainly learned the tough lessons in the seasons that followed.

Went to both legs of the tie. We were unlucky IIRC before Leicester scored as we hit the bar. They then scored direct from the corner as the interview says. Beck went for it at HT and took a defender off which left us exposed on the counter and the rest is history. It was the end of the dream. I couldn't actually watch the highlights until many years later.

I also went to both legs. That night was the beginning of the end of that great team. We all knew it too. Loads of U’s fans stopped at same pub outside Leicester on way back for a consolatory drink and all the talk there was of having reached the peak and the only way was down. So it proved in next 2 seasons!

Didn't we almost get promoted before the play offs by needing just a draw when playing away but let in a soft goal and failed ?

Didn't really sink in at the time how it would be the end of a great roller coaster ride...

Didn't we almost get promoted before the play offs by needing just a draw when playing away but let in a soft goal and failed ? No, we had dropped out of top 2 contention due to not being able to win at home between October and February...it was only our brilliant away form which kept us in the mix but from about the start of April automatic had slipped away following a 2-1 loss at Leicester and last game of the season we needed a point at Sunderland to make sure of that...2 nil down, fought back for 2 all and plays offs were assured...
