Good interview that. He gives plenty of answers to the week of grumbles if you want to hear them. I like that he's so clearly aware of what the fans are saying and takes the time to respond.

"I cannot believe Bonner is waving the white flag like this"
Heh, what we forget when we criticise him for bigging up the opposition is that he always talks about what we can offer and what we're good at too. There are plenty of examples of him talking up his own squad.

Big challenge but one the players should relish. Our form means there’s more pressure than would usually be the case for a game like this. I trust this lot to handle that. Gone for 1-1 on MPL. Just as an aside, I’m still firmly in the ‘isn’t it great that we’re playing teams like Sheffield Wednesday in league fixtures’ - and I think that’s fine for fans. In fact, I’d advise it. One day things will be a lot worse than they are now and even those who are presently moaning will long to be back where we are now! Can you explain a bit more what you mean by 'One day things will be a lot worse than they are now'. I'm curious (you've got me worried!) as you are usually optimistic about things. No need to worry. I just mean inevitably we will one day be far worse off than mid-table in League One, like perhaps the bottom six of League Two (hopefully no worse!). I remain an optimist and I should say there’s also scope for things to be even better than they are now. I think I’d be okay with something approximating last season/the start of this one for the next 3-5 years*, to be honest. That would mean we are an established third-tier club. Look how long it took us to re-establish ourselves in League Two and build a promotion-winning team - it was our seventh season back before we made it up. It’s really hard to continue an upward trajectory with a club that will always be destined to lose its most prized assets. It seems likely that next season we’ll see a very different Cambridge United and that is both exciting and frightening! *The club will have more lofty aims but, I suspect, would acknowledge that such an outcome on that timeframe would not be a bad thing, providing we continue to strengthen the foundations (stadium redevelopment, growing the fan base, opening up new revenue streams etc)

Russ your last couple of posts have summed it up perfectly.
Now cut that out as we know this MB doesn't like too much in the way of good reasonings and well balanced posts.

"You mean he shouts at players from the technical area? All managers do that" I'm sure you know that when you manage a game from the technical area it's a little bit more than shouting. Some goon from the main stand shouts, Bonner makes changes and rolls with the game. This idea that he's somehow inflexible is wrong. Andrew I didn’t say that he was. I merely said that all managers do it. There are a few opportunities for the manager to get his message across in a calm and conversational way, but those opportunities are really confined to breaks in play. For the rest of the time, while play is happening, managers have to convey their instructions by waving their arms, pointing and …… shouting.

I think its perfectly reasonable to here Bonner saying Sheffield Wednesday, Derby, Ipswich etc are hard teams to play against and dont agree we are showing too much respect to teams.
It doesn't mean we aren't trying to get a result or that we aren't working hard to turn things around. We will turn our form around at some point. As Mark said we have no divine right to get points from any game but through hard work we can turn things around.
I'm optimistically predicting a 1-1 draw tomorrow though would love a 0-0. Would be great to get a clean sheet.

Or communicating his message to the captain to convey, or the player nearest to him, for example. You quite often see individual players with instructions that pass through the team. 'Shouting and waving your arms about' plays a part of course, but when talking about in game management and flexibility that's not really what I was referring to in my original point.
As I say the idea - from some - that he's inflexible or has no plan B is nonsense. They're just not noticing the our constant in game management and flexibility, whether it always works is up for debate, of course.

Three generations of fans let’s say -
oldest have seen incredible, good, almost catastrophic, a bit good then completely mediocre and then really really good.
the middle group have seen at best the tail end of good before almost catastrophic, mediocre then really good
newest group have only seen an upward trajectory.
so success to some will be at one level, whilst to another group that’s irrational and to another it might seem pessimistic.
never going to strike a balance with everyone.

The Black History Month inspired programme cover is a thing of beauty by the way. Yeah a great cover agreed. Interesting how the largest face as it were is Brendon Batson. I think he was the first black captain in English football appointed by Big Ron of all people. Got sent off once for punching an opponent who racially abused him. Interesting also that Derrick Christie gets pride of place at the front rather than say a bigger name like well, Dion. Good to see Dennis Walker prominently but no sign of United's first black player Attu Mensah father of John who played for Sunderland a while back. Mind you no Armand One or super Johnny Hansen either! But yeah, top work.

Brendon actually got sent off twice the same season for punching the same racist scumbag, one Tony Coleman of Stockport County. Coleman actually admitted what he had done the first time but didn’t have the decency to admit that he had done it twice. Still remember the Stockport fans goading Brendon with chants of “N——r, N——r” Truly desperate days.

That's very interesting about Mensah and strange that there doesn't really seem to ever have been much mention of him from the club, I don't think I've heard him mentioned before in the 25 years I've supported the club and I don't recall any mention when he apparently died only last year. I wonder if it's just that he didn't play much for us and wasn't very good? I'm sure some on here remember seeing him play. I agree that tomorrow's programme cover is superb and a great tribute to those featured on it.
