I hope I’m wrong but we feel light this season, bar the first eleven it’s very weak and with the inevitable injuries we are quite poor at league two level let alone league one.. dare I safety bet on us to go down?

Yeah, survival felt good last season until we saw the strength of those coming into the league - Birmingham, Huddersfield, Wrexham & Stockport have significant ambition & resources to back it up, Rotherham always do well here & Mansfield are well backed.
Add to that Charlton & Wigan will be far better than last year & Reading could lift off at any moment pending a takeover.
That’s a third of the division there before you even mention the three losing play-off sides & a couple of others who were close.
This year is the strongest League One in memory & I’m probably not alone in being a bit indifferent about how the pre-season has been & worries about the season but context is always useful about our place in the food chain.

Full preseason and not a single trialist👎 Strang out This can only mean we still have clear, achievable transfer targets, if not it’s a huge worry (again) as we look very light on numbers and options. Two weeks ago I felt quite chipper with the business done, but so far we haven’t backed that up with the two or three we surely still need. Got a feeling of deja view. That said todays game was utterly meaningless given the team we put out ?

Has been a decent window from us, anyways I can't remember the last time we actually signed a trialist permanently but they are a bit of fun identifying them etc

I’m not overly concerned about today’s result but the squad depth already looks light and 2 of our new signings haven’t kicked a ball yet. Up front we are a Lavery injury away from disaster like last Christmas with no strikers. I still believe we are a CB light as well. Before Portugal with the flurry of new signings I was optimistic but not having added since is a concern. Yes we’ve the whole of August left but pre season is about integrating players into the squad/club..Big 7 days ahead for Mr Strang but then we’ve (I’ve) been saying that for years. It’s the one part of the club that hasn’t seen change in years.

It’s the one part of the club that hasn’t seen change in years. While I see your concerns, I take this as a positive not a negative. We've ultimately been successful 4 seasons in a row - that is incredibly rare. While I want to keep growing I also fear that if we get rid of everything that made us successful we end up with a Trigger's Broom situation where we have a bad year, fall back to where we were before Bonner and don't have anyone left who was part of the success in the first place so are none the wiser on how or why. Sporting directors are never going to be popular with fans but he seems to be liked and respected from those who matter. Barry and co were ruthless with Bonner when it mattered so I believe there's a good reason Strang is still here.

What is that good reason then do you believe why he is still here then out of interest ? I’m genuinely intrigued! We’ve sacked 2 promotion winning managers in his time here. We’ve changed CEO’s, club secretaries, sports science yet the ‘recruitment’ side stays the same. I know we aren’t the highest in terms of budget yet it seems each season we are short particularly in forward areas The owners were ruthless with Bonner but keep the kingmaker each year. I just feel it’s an area that needs looking at. Hopefully we sign a few more and I eat my words!

It just shows the step-up from youth football to league football. Colchester are a fairly limited League Two team and this has been men against boys. A lesson for all those who thought our (nearly) all-conquering FA Youth Cup side of 2 seasons ago were ready for the step up to the professional game. Should put that argument to bed at least!

Was surprised that Okedina started ahead of Morrison last night, the fact he was absent today would indicate he’s picked up an injury of some sort. Hoddle has been missing for a few weeks now, hopefully we will get answers when Monk does his post match. Could be Covid rearing its ugly head again - I know a fair few people who have contracted it in the last few weeks.
