I think the players are getting a fairly free ride here, tbh. Clearly something isn't quite clicking at the moment but I don't think it's just the coaching. I don't think there's going to be a great deal about the way we approach a game that has changed from the start of the season - organised low block, time the press, spring the counter attack, be brave and clinical in attacking phases. I'd be surprised if that intention has changed from the coaching staff so it's a little frustrating to see the lack of energy, the attacking impotency and the individual mistakes at times lately. What we do and how we do it on the training pitch matters of course, but I very much doubt we're coaching May to duck out of challenges, Digby to swear at the ref, or Bennett to cock up. Clearly it needs something, but the players need to shoulder some responsibility...particularly as they've proven they're much better. Andrew You are right Andrew in that the players need to shoulder responsibility as well. The issue is the general malaise that has spread throughout the squad. Worryingly it also happened last season. What has happened to make Digby do what he did yesterday? Why have Rennett, Brophy, Thomas and others dropped off so much in form since the start of the season? They have all just had time off and we have hardly any long term injuries so fatigue can't be an issue. Players will always have individual off days but this lot have had it as a whole for the last 2 games.

If Adam May starts on Tuesday after back to back shockers then there is something badly wrong within the camp.

I'd assume Digby was out of frustration. I think he obviously cares about the club, about Bonner, about his team mates or whatever and sometimes that emotion can be channeled in the wrong way. I could believe he was fired up, pumped with adrenaline and said something he shouldn't.
Its stupid but I 'get' it. He looked absolutely furious when he came off though so no idea what got him so wound up because the original yellow was the last thing I saw and there's no debating that at all. Good yellow to take if anything.

Diggers just took the "didn't even get a yellow in the derby" personally. Brief complete.

RBennet deserves to be dropped after his Northampton showing, I'd also drop Brophy, who has been poor for weeks and would have dropped Digby if he hadn't got himself suspended. May, too. He's been poor. Stevens LBennett Okedina Morrison Andrew Cousins Thomas Lankester McConnell Okenabirhie Ahadme Part of the problem with the squad is that there is little competition for the Back 4. Ibsen Rossi is injured again and where was the lesser spotted Haunstrup today? Rennett was poor today but the malaise is happening through the team again. Brophy too has dropped right off. Lots of us have suggested Okedina in at RB or a back 3 and Lennett our continued outlet on the right side, playing further forward. I would start the subs that came on today as they at least showed some fight. ArtvanD's post has persuaded me that 5-3-2 wingbacks is the way forward. So, Stevens RBennet (you are forgiven) Morrison Andrew LBennett Brophy Cousins McConnell Lankester Ahadme Okenabirhie

... Good yellow to take if anything. Andrew I thought it was a stupid, unnecessary foul. There was plenty of defensive cover to deal with it. It was even in their half, if I remember correctly, and the Northampton player who won the ball wasn't the quickest. I suppose boro's 4th was in the back of his mind, though.

If Adam May starts on Tuesday after back to back shockers then there is something badly wrong within the camp. May has been looking ponderous in the last 2 games. I suppose he was part of the team that did so well in the 1st season back in league 1 though. But he's been looking off the pace. Perhaps loaning him out to a league 2 side would be a good idea? Should be behind Thomas, Simper and Lancaster based on recent performances. I thought we looked much better against Northampton when the subs came on, so Kachunga should definitely start if he is fit enough. Also, perhaps it's time to give Okedina a run out?

I know football isn't as straightforward as this but it does slightly amuse me that as fans we are on one hand bemoaning a negative manager but the main solutions seem to be either sacrificing a forward so we can play a defender there or stick an extra centre back in.

I think it is about getting the best of this squad as it appears the current set up isn't working. Playing an extra defender isn't negative if it then allows 2 up top. Most other sides seem to play a back 3 as well. Fejiri & Gassan both look like they would be better suited playing as a pair. Lennett & Brophy seem more natural wing backs. Bonner played with a different system in League 2 but seems adverse to change it. I know he tried it a few times last season but maybe the personnel weren't right for it - he tried Okedina at RWB and Williams/Taylor as CB's IIRC.

I agree it could be an option in certain games or to just freshen things up. Just can picture the "BONNER PARKING THE BUS" "NO AMBISHUN" posts under the team sheet if Okedina, Bennett, Bennett, Morro and Andrew were all there though.

Will Digby not actually miss two games – 1 for the red & 1 for 5 yellows?

Morning all, hope you're well.
Bit of a weird season for us so far. Not entirely sure how we're 9th (although two more games played than some) given that we've been playing without any strikers for most of the last 3 months due to an injury crisis. Whether that sums up the quality of L1 this season or our lot aren't being given enough credit for keeping things ticking over, I'm not sure. Perhaps a bit of both.
We had 5 (perhaps 6) from our strongest starting XI missing on Saturday against Barnsley but we do get two of them back on Tuesday (O'Connor and Hamilton) after suspension. Hamilton will definitely come back in but not so sure Captain O'Connor will. We picked up another injury at the weekend as well. Youth product Makama led the line against Barnsley and he was about to move to the National League South on loan before Kennedy's sacking so we're not blessed with any proper striker options really.
Skubala has had a respectable start with 4 points from a difficult opening week (Stevenage (a), Orient (a) and Barnsley (h)). We don't play for 10 days after this because it's FA Cup weekend so it'll be his first chance to get some proper training into the players.
