Christ he’s only 2 years older than me!!!
I thought he was pushing 50 with us being his 6th managerial job.

His time out of the game makes me a little sceptical. Clearly has a point to prove and a reputation to rebuild. Interestingly, that's the 'risk' part of his appointment I like. Yes he wants to get back into football management after over 3 years out and if he can do that successfully with us, rebuild his reputation and oversee our continued progress, then it's a win-win.

Bigger risk than Harris but a higher ceiling if things go right. That's a really good way of putting it - thank you.

Hopefully, he can teach them how to pass and be more clinical in front of goal

Interesting.
Monk has my full support. It won't be very vocal as recurrent infections have done a number on the old pipes, but I can clap as vigorously as the next person.
LFG, as the youngsters say.

This appointment has its caveats, but truth be told any appointment we're going to be in a position to make likely always will. We also have no idea who was ever a "realistic" target for us and, having to unexpectedly find a new manager at about the worst possible time in the season to do so, I'm not sure how much better a fist of it we could've made really.
As pointed out, his win ratio elsewhere is decent & more than good enough for what we need to achieve in the next year or two (if not exactly stellar) & it's certainly something a bit different. Harris was, to all intents and purposes, an experienced continuity candidate; don't think you can say that about this. As TSFOR said, it's riskier than Harris was, but the potential is much greater if things go right. You'd think if things don't go well for him here, he may have reached the end of the road as a manager, so he needs us just as much as we need him right now.
So long as he can do what he needs to in the remaining games of this season then, with two-thirds of the squad out of contract, next year could be very interesting indeed.
The whole club needs to deliver now, starting on Saturday – and that goes as much for the fans as it does Monk & the players.

Happy in general for this, I’m glad we haven’t just appointed someone with the sole aim of keeping us up but with the goal of building something better next season too. Bit of a risk staying up this season but I’m hoping the gap we have is enough for him to maintain. No idea on playing style? I thought Swansea were quite good on the eye back in the day but no idea what he’s been like since?

Lets hope Swansea dont sack their manager anytime soon...
Preference would have been Ainsworth/Duff/Rowett but not sure how realistic that was, this seems to be about as good as it gets and certainly better than the alternatives

Interesting insight. Admittedly from a while ago but if that's still the thought process he goes through it's promising. He feels like more of a reset than Harris did which is probably what we need

You look at his record, and I think its pretty reasonable, especially when you consider context.
Swansea had arguably peaked under Brendan Rodgers, he did pretty well there all things being considered. Leeds he nearly got into the play-offs, at a time when they'd been a bit of a mess. Let go when the owners changed hands. Middlesbrough came in after they'd been relegated, not exactly a stable environment to work in. Birmingham are something of a basket case. Sheffield Wednesday arguably the same.
Going to be interesting. Hopefully the time away from managing has him fired up and ready to attack it.

Wonder if he was in the running a few months ago and why Harris was chosen instead?
Just imagine if Brophy scores a hat trick this Sat - just give him manager of the year now?

Really interesting appointment, his record from the above posts looks more than enough for what we need in the short term. It will be really interesting to see how he approaches the rest of the season tactically. Having a coach that wants to play football rather than hoof ball is a welcome addition.

I think we’d pretty much decided on Harris the second Bonner was out the door. That’s the last I’m going to mention those two. We move on and look forward now. The unknown is always a little scary, but also exciting. Let’s see what happens.

I’m pleased with that appointment. Shows again decent ambition by the club. Monk arrives at the Abbey with a point to prove, plays a decent style of football and seems to blood youngsters in. More upbeat with this one than Hoofball Harris, must admit. Survive this season and I’m looking forward to the squad clear out in the summer.
