I think people forget that Lankester is only 24. His fitness and performance levels have improved massively since he’s been here. Clearly he still has things to work on but he could easily be a championship regular in 4 years time.
He is the type of player that we need to build a team around for next season. His finishing must improve, but it’s encouraging that he’s so often in the right place at the right time to get his shots away.
He’s also the only one who is consistently trying to make things happen, it doesn’t always come off, but sometimes that’s down to others not being on his wave length.
Rossi, Okedina, Simper, May- all signed similar length contracts to Jack, none of them find themselves in the team or very often the squad. It’s players like that who are going to cause Monk issues cos they’re all on contract but clearly not rated/trusted by previous managers. Never underestimate the value of a player who a manager can trust to do his job on a consistent basis. That’s also why I’d keep Brophy. The squad needs dependable types.

I'd say Simper's been quite unlucky with injury this season, pretty sure he'd have been used while we've had 2-3 midfielders fit. Okedina I feel has a chance to break into the starting XI but I felt Harris seemed to have something against him following the Orient game, where yes he was poor, but poor performances from Morro and especially Rennett haven't seen them dropped. Rossi's an interesting one, he's looked solid when he has played but maybe he trains poorly or something because I'm really surprised how little he played. I'd also say that at the ages those 3 are, they are probably not going to be that willing to sit on the bench every week so from their perspectives there's possibly an incentive to leave also

Our transfer business will be determined by which division we are in. League 2 is a real possibility.

Jack has to considerably improve his goals and assists to be considered a first choice in the 10 role, they are currently woeful. I don’t trust any of our ‘creative players’ in the squad currently and would look to move them all on in the summer. We absolutely have to improve central midfield, and find centre backs who can play a little higher and keep the ball better than the current experienced heads.

I'd also say that at the ages those 3 are, they are probably not going to be that willing to sit on the bench every week so from their perspectives there's possibly an incentive to leave also I rate Okedina, he’s very raw and makes mistakes, but is still young and will get better. I just think/hope that Jobe will be a squad regular next season, so that would push Okedina further down the pecking order. Simper is one who would benefit from us going down. I just don’t see him being a league 1 regular. The emergence of Hoddle could also see him pushed further down the line. I’d probably send him out on loan and see how things are in Jan, but a Ben Worman scenario looks likely for him. Can’t judge Rossi cos none of us have seen enough of him. He looks like he should be a very decent CB, but it’s been 2 years wasted for him. He has to be a genuine contender for a starting place or we should look to move him on for his own sake as much as anything.

He made a good start on Saturday in the Assist department. He obviously has to improve, but he’s 24 and is getting better. Natural progression should see both stats improve. The more he plays, the better he will get. We were bad all 2nd half on Sat, but we got worse once Jack and Kachunga went off.

I think Ibsen-Rossi and Okedina are unfortunate that we play a back four and Bennett and Morrison are, due to the necessity of experience, the first two names on the sheet.
Lankester is a funny one because he has no shortage of effort and is obviously a capable player but, to use a horrible Americanism, he isn't a 'clutch' player. He often lacks composure at the most important time, snatching at easy chances and giving the ball away under no pressure. You certainly can't fault his effort though and his involvement in the goal on Saturday was superb and he certainly should have stayed on the pitch.

I like Jack tbf. He's perhaps our bravest player on the ball and one player most likely to make something happen. There's definite areas to improve but he's hard working and fairly consistent even when he's not creating/scoring, and is one I think has growth potential. He's the sort of age profile I'd want for the squad next year too so unless someone gave us 50k for him he'd be part of my squad next year.
I guess you could argue a case for Kaikai but I think expectation drags him down a bit. He's been peripheral for too many games and my expectations of him were higher than that...he's had 2-3 unplayable games tbf but he's one of the first in the bin for me.
Clean slate for whoever stays of course, but I'd prefer we get a brand new slate rather than keep wiping stains of the old one, please and thank you.
I'd like to keep Corr because I like him and value his history with the club but if Monk wants his own man then that's fine by me. I'd dump Betsy, he might be great for all I know but I feel nothing for him particularly and have no emotional ties.
Next season feels like a big opportunity to try and push towards the next phase of our growth to me and I'm quite excited by it. I don't think (m)any of these players get us there so I really want us to be brave and brutal over the summer.

A new Manager in the building at this point in the season should provoke players into proving whether they want to be here next season. In short, those out of contract this summer are 100% (or should be 100%) playing for their future with the club over the last 1/4 of this season. I fear at present that there are scraps in the squad who I'd keep if the decision was mine, and it really is scraps:
Keep:
Stevens Mannion Lennett (I believe we have a 12m option?) Andrew Morrison Jobe (Apparently done really well at the 'Heed) Rossi (contracted) Digby (contracted) Thomas (contracted) Njoku Kachunga Lankester (contracted) Ahadme (if Ipswich are interested in a 'permanent')
Try to sell/offload: Okedina Simper May
Fringe Players or Likely to loan out for a season: Yearn Hoddle McConnell Akanbi Beckett Chadwick
Return or Release: Taylor Bonne Rennett Cousins Dunk Kaikai Okenabirhie Haunstrup Brophy Janneh Gibbons
I would have kept Taylor on a new deal had Harris not walked, and I think we'd have seen a different Macauley Bonne too, however that is the risk you take when a Manager recruits his mates. Perhaps I'm wrong about Lyle, maybe he really does want to be here next season? If we are in L2 it'd be well worth a punt as he'd destroy that level as indeed many on my keep list would too.
This summer will be the huge change we've needed for a while in terms of playing squad, and whilst I'm going to hate H not being a CUFC player, it is probably time to completely refresh what we are about on the field before it derails all of the other good works at the club.

The only thing I'll say about Dunk is that if he is released it has to be handled very delicately - for my sake as much as anything - it needs to be announced before the season ends because if I don't get a big emotional goodbye with him walking out onto the pitch and giving us a farewell speech I'm going to be very very very upset. I think I'd find it impossible to forgive if he's just gone over the summer and all we get is him saying goodbye on Instagram.

I can see Dunk going back to Bromley. If they can get themselves in the league he’d be an excellent signing for them. (Fitness permitting)

...to use a horrible Americanism, he isn't a 'clutch' player... Blame the British English. It comes from Invictus, a poem by William Ernest Henley, viz.: "In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud."

Obviously we need to keep the youngsters, Jobe, Yearn, Hoddle, McConnell.
Wouldn't mind Stevens/Mannion staying unless we can get a huge upgrade. I know they are both prone to a clanger every now and then, but overall fine for this league.
Tough one, but I think it's time to let Dunk go. Only so many career ending injuries he can come back from.
Would keep Lennett, Ibsen Rossi, Andrew and Morrison, but think we could easily replace all of our defenders.
Lankester, Digby and, if Monk can teach him to cross, then Brophy. The rest of the midfielders can all leave.
Until Bolton, would have had Taylor as a main priority to keep, after his last two games I'm not so sure. If we can keep Ahadme fine. Okenabirhie is too injury prone unfotunately. Is Janneh still here? Would like us to actually give Bonne some decent service before I write him off.
