Taking the knee was a token box ticking gesture. Far more effective ways to get that across How would you deal with it more effectively? It took/takes seconds at the start of a game. And it still has people talking about it now. Seems pretty effective. The previous post highlights my thoughts but I do recall the abuse Saka & co got at a tournament, surely the clubs could have come off social media until that problem was fixed or the companies took it more seriously. I think Zaha was one that thought the knee was pointless and there were other examples.

The point is, it doesn't matter whether it was effective or wasn't. Personally, I thought taking the knee was simply a solidarity statement with the anti-racism movement, so I would happily do it. And I trust the NHS when they say I would be better off having a vaccine than not. But they're just my opinions, and the only person whose actions should be driven by my opinions, is me. If we have a player who doesn't want to take the knee or who doesn't want to get vaccinated, then they shouldn't have to. We live (lived?) in a free society where people have the right to make these choices for themselves. If they have to wear a certain item of clothing as part of their contract, then that's different - they had the right to say no when they were choosing whether to sign on or not. But where a player is not contractually bound to act in a certain way, they should have that choice. I recall a lad playing for another EFL club... I think he was Irish(?), I'm sure Google will fill in the blanks... refusing to wear the poppy. He got pelters for it. Personally, I think it means he's misunderstood what the poppy represents, but the bottom line is that it's his choice and he should be allowed to get on with it.All I care about with Taylor is his ability to be a good player and make the team better, for a cost the club can afford. James Mclean. Now at Wrob & Wryan's Wrexham. Refuses every year as he is from Derry.

Londonderry.
Has the same chip on his shoulder about Bloody Sunday as a lot of Irish do.
NB - It was a war crime. Absolutely heinous.
But they called themselves an army too and they committed atrocities on the same scale which he never mentions.
It’s funny that this has been his stance yet he represented Northern Ireland and has played on the British Mainland that he hates so much for the best part of 15 years now, raising his kids here too.

A chip on his soldier about his people being murdered by the state he lives in? Don't always be a classless sponge. You really are dangerously ignorant.

The same state that he later elected to represent. He is an idiot and a hypocrite. In football, not war. You seem to conflate the two, which, given your posts on here, is hardly surprising. Also, it was the British state that killed those people marching for civil rights, not the one in the north of Ireland. You also seem to have conflated people marching for civil rights and paramilitaries, which, again, is hardly surprising.

Derry, not Londonderry. Good grief.
And he represented Ireland Proper at senior level, not Occupied Ireland.
It's almost as if the atrocities of the state are a different thing to the country itself.

A few points-
I read somewhere that Hoddle is now injured and out for a few weeks??
Didn’t Stevens suffer with a confidence/ mental health issue at Oxford?
Andrew isn’t as bad as some are claiming. I’ve never seen a team play with such a lack of support in front of the full backs.

Stevens caught glandular fever at Oxford and was out for a while which had an effect on his confidence: www.oxfordmail.co.uk/sport/19880581.oxford-uniteds-jack-stevens-glandular-fever-struggle/

Londonderry.
This is a football forum. We clearly have strong views and different views.
Thankfully those on all sides have the space in which to peacefully air those views and even more thankfully despite those opinions we stand shoulder to shoulder on the terraces.
I say what I say without trying to offend or upset but knowing that it could do so.
I’m saying no more on the matter.

And the poppy that started this debate was to recognise those who had fallen in the First World War and were introduced in 1921. So not sure why Duffy has a problem with that.
