Piggybacking on the Gangster films thread, it might be nice to have a thread running for people to say which films they've watched recently, and post a simple review. I'm no massive film buff but I like a good movie. I'll start............. I recently watched the original 'Let The Right One In' www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/I have a load of films that I need to get around to watching, and the other night I stuck this on. For some reason I'd got into my head that this was a film about some teenagers stuck in a remote house, and wasn't expecting much. But what I got was a terrific film - it's kind of a love story with a vampire twist, but don't let that put you off as it's nothing like the blood sucking shite that is being churned out these days. It has a slow start, but still manages to stir your curiosity while the storyline takes shape. And the ending is excellent. Well worth a watch if you get the chance. I've even read that the Hollywood version is very good also............strangely enough.

I watched the hollyweird version a few weeks back, thought it was ok but nothing special. I've watched tons of good films lately and would recommend them all;
The girl with a dragon tattoo, and the 2 sequels, all great. I saw the devil. Excellent Korean revenge film, really gory and suspenseful(?) Ink. Low budget but extremely high production film about the good v evil dreams we are given, and about the choicrs we make in life having a positive or negative outcome. I can't explain It too well, but really advise seeing it. It blew me away. Also the misic throughout Is excellent.

Let the right one in is a perfect example of why the Yanks shouldn't be allowed to do remakes. I believe their version was shot for shot to the original as well. I've recently watched Spanish horror film Rec www.imdb.com/title/tt1038988/ Starts off like your standard zombie horror (think 28 days) but goes to another level. The ending is pretty horrific, I'm not ashamed to say I was hiding behind the sofa. (I'll lend it you Face) I also finally got round to watching True Grit which I thoroughly enjoyed. You can't really go wrong with the Coen brothers and it didn't disappoint. Even the Mrs enjoyed it. I'm desperate to see The Tree of Life but haven't had the chance to watch it yet. Need to see it on the big screen.

Agreed about Let The Right One In. Saw it a few years ago and thought it was brilliant. Saw the remake recently... poor.
True Grit is fantastic though No Country For Old Men remains my favourite of theirs.
I also really want to see Tree of Life but I don't think anywhere in Cambridge is showing it now (though you live in Walden or something don't you?). It was on at the Arts last week but it's run has finished now. Hmmmmm.
Recently I've watched The Diving Bell & The Butterfly and Good Bye Lenin! both of which were excellent.

I saw a film recently that's stuck with me, it's a Norwegian film called Dead Snow. I think the only introduction it needs is that the film contains Nazi Zombis....that alone should give you an idea of the type of film it is. Quite similar to Shaun of the Dead in that it acts as an homage to the genre whilst being a bloody good (and funny) film in it's own right.

Bloody Hell guys, I still trying to get through the films in the other thread! I watched Chopper yesterday for the first time after reading his biography a few years ago. www.imdb.com/title/tt0221073/A heads up if you have read the book - its not as gritty and some of the bits are made up while they miss some important parts out. 7/10

Never Let Me Go
About kids being farmed essentially in an Orwellian type boarding school, with no contact with the outside world to keep them healthy for organ donation in their 20s. Interesting concept, could've been really good. But the writer (or author, I've not read the book) decided to make the main story about a love triangle, with the organ donation a convenient way of tying it all together. Shame really.

I also watched Good Bye Lenin! recently, thought it was triffic, thoroughly enjoyable. German, so not for non-subtitle fans (unless you're a German speaker, I suppose).
And a couple which I found lurking on iplayer, which had been on the BBC recently: 1) In Search of a Midnight Kiss - a low-budget American indie film. Charming, 'real' and just all-round nice. 2) Tell No One: a French film, which I suppose would be called a thriller. It keeps you guessing and has a lovely French lady in.

It's a decentish adaptation but the book is much better. Although I far preferred The Remains of the Day to Never Let Me Go

I watched the animated 'Despicable Me' with the family on Saturday evening: www.imdb.com/title/tt1323594/It's not on the level of any of the Pixar stuff, but a decent watch anyhoo. Some great animation and excellent characters. What made it even more enjoyable was the fact that the little girl 'Edith' is very similair to my 3 year old daughter - both in looks and mannerisms:

My kids love Despicable Me. I don`t know how many times I have sat through it. Saw it three times at the cinema (thank you odeon kids club!!),and god knows how many times on dvd. Took them to see Gnomeo & Juliet at the weekend. They enjoyed it, I didn`t.

For those looking for something a bit different, I'd recommend 'A Scanner Darkly', based on a book by Philip K Dick (author of the adapted movies Blade Runner, Minority Report, Total Recall, among others). www.imdb.com/title/tt0405296/A typical Dick adaptation , set in a bleak, hi-tech future, the movie is less plot driven, concentrating more on theme and character. The cast is nigh-on perfect (considering the main theme of the movie), with Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder and especially Robert Downey-Junior and Woody Harrelson putting in decent and often amusing performances. The main reason it's 'a bit different' is that it's filmed in 'Rotoscope' where live fottage is largely overdrawn with animation, giving the movie an animated appearance. It may not be to everyone's liking but IMO it definitely adds to the feel of the movie.

Yeah, A Scanner Darkly is ace. Have you seen Waking Life? It's a sort of spiritual successor kinda thing. Not as good.

There is a film on at the Arts all next week that sounds interesting, it's called Project Nim about a Chimpanzee raised as a human child....timed perfectly for Planet of the Apes (which is ace fun).
I also saw Super 8 the other day which was very disappointing...the story line was utter garbage.
