I have recently watched: Antichrist, Don't Look Now, and Audition.
I'd recommend the latter two, with Audition probably the pick of the bunch. Next up will be Irreversible.

You mean the Nic Roeg Donald Sutherland Julie Christie psychological thriller from the mid '70s - haven't seen it for 20 years at least but remember it being really good. Antichrist meh. But don't know audition - tell me more.

Affirmative on Don't Look Now. Your memory serves you well - it's very good. Antichrist wasn't anything special. Audition is a Japanese horror: www.imdb.com/title/tt0235198/It includes a pretty gruesome torture scene.

Watched Cronos the other night, a kind of quaintly bizarre supernatural vampire movie, directed by Guillermo del Toro (his debut I believe). Mainly in subtitles but with some English dialogue - Ron Perlman is in it who GdT cast as Hellboy. May not be everyone's cup of tea (doesn't score too well on IMDb) but I quite liked it. www.imdb.com/title/tt0104029/

Just watched The Hunger Games and Battle Royale. I can't speak for how true to the book THG was but it was certainly a good story with good acting. Battle Royal is a similar theme to THG being school children forced to kill each other. It has some of the best/worst deaths and reactions to being shot I've ever seen but it's a good plot with a real mixed bag of actors. (oh and it's in Japanese)

The acting isn't the best, mainly due to the film being largely unscripted, although I reckon that this adds more to the realism and moral message of the movie. No mini skirted teens either

Anyone seen a Kiwi film called Scarfies? I was given an unlabelled copy on DVD recently, and was simply told 'watch this, trust me.' It's an absolutely mad film, starts off quite light hearted, around a storyline of a few skint students doing up an abandoned house, and then gets very dark after a suprise find in the basement. Highly reccomended.

Irreversible is a truly mental film. Love the way it's shot, every scene plays out in one shot, very clever.
Be warned though, the director admittedly sets out to disturb the viewer. You'll see what I mean when the camera starts spinning in the first scene.

Nice one belly77, I'll have to take a look. mainly after a review on IMDb - "I managed to partially erase it from memory after a couple of years, and only now write these comments because a friend of mine said she wanted to see it. So I'm sending it off to her, and glad to be rid of it. No doubt there will be others who want to see it for the reason it's so horrible. Prepare to feel a sense of mental and emotional damage for the rest of your life" F*ck rom-coms and Jesse Eisenberg, this sounds like my kinda movie!! Edit: Further IMDb review: "The film has disturbed me more than I could ever have imagined. I deeply encourage anyone thinking about watching this film no too, one of the biggest regrets I have. It was more grotesque, shocking, sick and horrible than any other film out there, and I cannot believe it got through censorship" Now I have to watch it!

It's not a Serbian film or Human Centipede. It's actually a decent film that doesn't just set out for the shock factor.

Just watched it Hmmm, not what I was expecting actually and yes, you're spot on, it doesn't set out to shock gratuitously. Those reviewers totally miss the point of the movie and it's a shame. Wasn't too sure of the format until the end and I kinda guessed what the 'twist' would be some time before then. Excellent, truly believable performances throughout, dealing with a nasty, nasty theme. Many thanks for the heads-up!

That ten minute rape scene is probably the most uncomfortable I've felt whilst watching a film.

Stop with the spoilers! I'll watch it soon. I'm halfway through Import/Export at the moment. One of several films I recorded during Film 4's 'extreme season'. It has started promisingly. Anyone seen it?

That ten minute rape scene is probably the most uncomfortable I've felt whilst watching a film. Same here so I decided to hit FFW after a few minutes. I felt that watching any more wasn't really necessary to understand the scene. The Rectum fire extinguisher bit was particularly uncomfortable too!

(oh and it's in Japanese) Battle Royale is ace, the sequal is terrible. On the subject of Asian films, Korean war film 'Brotherhood' is superb: www.imdb.com/title/tt0386064/Also, took my eldest two to watch 'The Pirates' the other evening. It was good and the humour almost seemed heavily pitched to adults in many places. Without being rude of course. Plus any film that has a soundtrack containing a Flight of the Conchords number can never be bad We watched it at the cinema in Cromer which was a nice old style place. Much more character than the modern cinema's.
