I love most things Taika
Freeguy, Thor Ragnarok, Hunt for the wilder people, Jojo rabbit, What we do in the shadows. All fantastic films but I feel like Hollywood has tried to push him more as an actor then as a small usually funny cameo. Either way he's living his best life. I'll watch that film eventually but i've run out of time to do so before it goes out of the cinema
Watched Ferrari the other day, not a perfect film but watchable enough. Didn't know about the story so when the main event happens it came as a bit out of the blue at just how brutal it was (that's the best I can do without spoiling it). Adam Driver was an odd choice to play a 60 year old man but he does a solid job as he always does.
I feel like it could have done a tiny bit more with the story both before and after the story it tells but hey ho. 6.5/10

"Salt burn 5/10
Other than Barry keoghan being brilliant in this film it’s generally a poor one, takes a long time to get going and when it does I found it very disappointing, avoid"
I quite enjoyed it. The slow burn opener pulled me in and I found the ambiguity of everyone's motivations quite interesting. Keoghan is brilliant but I also thought the entire cast was very good and captivating, some of the scenes were superbly shot too (the one shot opener and closer were well done for example).
The characterisation of Ollie felt a little sudden though and I'm not sure it handled it's twists particularly well either. The ending felt a little rushed too.
Could have been excellent, but instead it's interesting but flawed. Maybe would have been suited to a series where it could breathe a bit. Reminded me of The Talented Mr Ripley.

One Life
Best film i've seen this year (wahay, bantz). Genuinely though I don't think i'll watch many better than that. Not a story i'm overly familiar with outside of the TV part. As holocaust films go it shows absolutely none of the atrocities and none of the camps yet somehow is one of the saddest films i've ever seen. Some fantastic acting from all involved and the main story is short but sweet, really drives home some of the fantastic work that he did. I'm sure Hopkins will get an Oscar nom for it despite being used sparingly
Bring your tissues because someone was cutting onions the entire way through. I'll give it a 9/10
A weird subnote but the women who plays the wife was also in another WW2 show (hunters) playing Eva Braun.

Now my regret is not seeing it sooner so I could have called my dog Tupac!

Another shout for One Life. I remember watching the 'That's Life' episode at the time episode and it stuck with me despite not entirely understanding the gravity of it all
An amazing film, beautifully told and superbly acted. Emotional throughout but almost unbearably so towards the end.
However...I think it could have been a masterpiece rather than 'just' brilliant. My complaint, if you can call it that, is an odd one but it almost feels as though it 'coasts' by on the strength of it's remarkable story and great performances without exploring some of the psychological impact on the families and children or the stories of some of the other volunteers.
That said, it's like complaining we 'only' best Newcastle 1-0 two years ago. I was in absolute bits watching the film and cried again a couple of times on the walk home. Remarkable.

I usually avoid most of the cinema around this time of year, mainly because it's Oscar bait kind of films. But I went to watch Poor things today and that was a very very good film.
I've never seen the director's previous films but I get the idea they're usually very weird. It's a very odd story, weirdly similar to Alita Battle Angel (even if the entire tone and setting is very different).
Ruffalo & Stone are very good as the main 2 you'll see throughout the film and Dafoe appears every so often without having a whole lot to do. My only complain is it's about 10-15 too long, could easily be ended just before the final act. Give it a solid 8.5/10 highly recommend

Ferrari
Big Michael Mann fan so was looking forward to this and it was a good, solid 2 hours of beautiful shots of Italian countryside, very loud engines, very expensive clothes for the leads and 1 truly shocking, very graphic scene near the end. Would have liked a bit more on how Ferrari built the business before when the film was set (1957) but glad it wasn’t another 3 hour film as had watched Killers of The Flower moon Friday night which was excellent. Penelope Cruz is the best actor in it and Driver delivers a good performance. Definitely a Dad friendly film and will probably do well when it arrives on video on demand. Not top tier Mann but best of the rest. 7/10

The Holdovers - 6/10
I think this is a film for a man of a certain age (40+) the humour was very dry but the people in my screening were laughing very loudly to some very average jokes. It's probably a love letter to comedy's from the 70's but I just found it to be as average as I was expecting it to be
Oddly a Christmas film that was released here after Christmas, very odd. My advice is go see poor things instead

Anatomy of a Fall Perfect. 10/10 The best film about truth ever. It's absolutely brilliant and I hope Sandra Huller wins the oscar for best actress*. But just like some other recent films, like Leave the World Behind for instance, some viewers will be convinced they've just wasted 2 and a half hours of their time. edit - *though she won't

You know, it's strange because I usually love films like this, but it didn't work for me, quite contrived, not very original and not very convincing. Kentish

Argylle - 7/10
I love a Matthew Vaughn film (Kingsman, Kick ass, Xmen First Class) and that was no different. It has it's issues but largely they're easy to ignore (Cat CGI, one too many twists, mental story).
The story is insane which works in it's favour for the most part, there feels like there is a twist every 10 minutes (once it get's going) and largely a lot of them work. The first twist is easy to work out and the last twist is predictable and feels a bit lazy (but I'm going with the theory it's a piss take of the Fast and furious films).
The action set pieces are as good as you see in the Kingsman films and it has a great ensemble cast. Post Credit scene (only a 30 second wait) actually leads somewhere and i'm hoping it makes enough money to justify a sequel

The Ironclaw - 6.5/10
I'm not a huge wrestling fan and had no idea what to expect but I suspect any fans of 80s Wrestling will love it. Zac Efron & Jeremy Allen White (the bear) are very good in this, bit crazy how jacked they got for the role. It's a bit of a slow burner but it definitely tells the story it's trying to.
Lily James continues her role of "average" looking women who is there as the female love interest and does little else that she seems to have perfected now after doing that role 800 times.
