Got my tickets to see Wales` greatest band, Super Furry Animals, in Cardiff in December. Playing Fuzzy Logic and Radiator in full. Not sure what I think of this trend of playing albums right through at gigs. However, they`re both superb albums so it should be good. It really depends on how good the album was and how the set is structured around it. When I saw Metallica do the black album in full, they started the set with a few other hits before playing the album in reverse order, allowing them to finish the main set with 'Enter Sandman', rather than start with it and encore with other big hitters from their catalogue and it worked brilliantly. Apart from the rare occasions when a band does their new record in full on tour, it's obviously a bit of a nostalgia trip as well which can be good or bad depending whether the band are still any good or past it. I remember seeing Reel Big Fish a while back and thinking there was something off about their set; they'd just played their greatest hits album, replacing a few with their godawful "look, we can play it in reggae/death metal/jazz too" shtick... And it was exactly the same set as I'd seen them play several years earlier. At least this time we had Sonic Boom Six and Big D in support. I've blanked out their other gig's support act, such was the blandness of their MTV "I'm American, honest" power pop guff. I only remember that much because I'd just seen the James Warner Prophecies, who's played the ever-popular Fashionable Place of Birth.

Not sure what I have got myself into, but going to see King Crimson tomorrow night. Opinions divided - ageing rockers or rock legends? Rock legends. Having said that, I've only got 6 KC albums which is not a lot considering they've released some 21,567 albums (mostly compilations/live/demos stuff) throughout the years. Problem with KC is you've got to be in the mood to appreciate them, as you'll get tired of some of their live improvisations which they have a habit of doing if you're not. Still, In the Court of the KC, Red, Discipline and Larks Tongue are all solid classics. I'm not a big prog rock fan, but they're easily my fav of the original PR bands. Miles better than say Genesis, Yes or ELP. My opinion of course

I saw SFA a few weeks ago at an outdoor festival in central London. They were good, played a mix of old and new. The whole album thing can be good, have seen quite a few bands do it the best being Slayer doing Reign in Blood, and Mudhoney doing Superfuzz Bigmuff. Often a chance to hear rarely played songs.
I was put off Download by the lack of metal, too much guitar pop music too few proper riffs and feeling old at 27. Line up depending I'd consider going back. I'm starting to prefer indoor multi-venue events these days and have loved the last couple of years of Desertfest.

Off to see the Fannies next month. Fancied The Divine Comedy too but feel over £30 for a ticket is a bit much (sold out anyway so moot point)

Didn`t see them in Cardiff yesterday due to financial restrictions (skint again!). Did see An Evening With Neil Hannon a couple of years back in a really small venue which is an old chapel. Just him solo, either on grand piano or guitar doing basically a greatest hits type set. Absolutely brilliant. Even played My Lovely Horse!

Saw Primal Scream at The Cornex a few years ago, was excellent but giving them a miss this time. Next one for me is Skindred at the junction.

I saw Blossoms at the junction the other week. Very young, poppy, pinky even but reasonably entertaining. The 30-40 groupies in the crowd reminded me of the Arctic Monkeys' following when they first started, reeling off every single lyric and drum beat almost.

I saw Blossoms support Kasabian in June, was unaware of them at the time but thought they were decent. Haven't bothered listening to them since actually, must get on that.
