That "I know it was then, but it could be again" banner must have really motivated Iceland.

It's a horrible feeling seeing England lose to Iceland and not be able to take the piss.

I get a horrible feeling that Foden, rightly lauded as footballer of the year, just doesn’t seem to have what it takes at international level. He seems to just flit prettily through games without really ever making things happen. He could well be dropped for Palmer for the first game. I hope I’m wrong about Foden though.

The England team is clearly a collection of talented individuals. My concern, though, is about their ability to function as a cohesive team unit in the upcoming tournament. They lost their way trying to break down a well organised Iceland defence last night and looked increasingly ragged and quite frankly, shambolic as the game wore on.
Clearly last night's result has no bearing on their tournament chances, but those concerns remain.

Last night was worrying but you also have to remember Southgate picked the side to get minutes into certain players rather than perhaps playing the ideal formation to break Iceland down.
Gordon made things happen but he lacked quality at the end. Foden was anonymous (again). I thought TAA played really well in an attacking sense when he came on but I understand the concerns about his defensive frailties. Walker did ok so I can understand why he’d be first pick at RB. How did Kane miss that absolute sitter? Saying that, Iceland also missed a sitter so that probably evens things out.
Why is Shaw in the squad? He may well be able to play a part in the latter group games but he won’t be match sharp and there’s a reasonable chance he’ll break down again if he’s thrust straight into competitive football. If Southgate values his presence in the squad, he should’ve asked him to go as backroom staff rather than as a player!

The England team is clearly a collection of talented individuals. My concern, though, is about their ability to function as a cohesive team unit in the upcoming tournament. And unfortunately Southgate’s unwillingness to form a team around the squads abilities. Seems intent on a formation and pattern of play. Lots of No 10’s in this squad and not sure he can get the best out of all of them.

Seems to be trying to shoehorn the popular players in and make the tactics revolve around them

Seems to be trying to shoehorn the popular players in and make the tactics revolve around them I wouldn’t read too much into Palmer and Foden playing the other night - it was only because Saka is being rested and Bellingham hasn’t joined up yet. I doibt we’ll see them all on the pitch together at the Euros - too many number 10s doesn’t work, particularly if we’re without a natural left back to give width on that side. The two posts above illustrate how Southgate can’t really win as he’ll either be criticised either way. I think generally he gets the balance right and isn’t afraid to leave out some stars to get a coherent team. It could be argued neither Palmer or Foden should start in the opening game with Shaw not being available for that one. Maybe Gordon or Eze should be on the left? I honestly don’t know but it’s guaranteed Southgate will get pelters whatever he does! Even if we win the tournament some morons will say it’s in spite of him.
