Cates is a very good shout - Chapman is fine but I do like Linekar and he will be a big loss to the programme. I'd like it to not be an ex-pro. As pundits, fine, but aside from Lineker (who I really like because he has the ability to ask questions of the pundits that a layman might) I think non-footballers do a better job of chairing the discussions. That said, unless they improve the spectacle of Premier League football by undoing most of the nonsense they've inflicted on it over the past 10-15 years I'll still be fast forwarding through the punditry, and just watching the games, as usual. Talk of VAR and conspiracies and referring decisions and finances etc. is still shite whoever is doing the actual talking. I like the fact its an ex pro as he can have the banter with Shearer etc that non pros can't

I reckon it'll be Dion. My acquaintence at the BBC, Sister Ovary of the Leg-Iron, who's a researcher for Songs of Praise, told me to lump on £10.

Colin Murray would be my non footballer choice. Thought he was excellent on the Football League show, and think he's just a good, very knowledgeable presenter in general.

Mark Chapman's very good I get it but def one of the lads. Think it's time for a woman and there's no better than Kelly Cates. A journalist for over 20 years which is very important, she's from footballing royalty but not traded on it, has the clear respect of players, managers and pundits alike and knows the game inside out and upside down. She's great on screen and it's never about her unlike others we could all name.

Does hosting MOTD in 2024 hold the same gravitas as it did when Lineker first started hosting 25 years ago? You can see the Prem goals on apps about 30 mins after the final whistle now and get all the relevant match stats too.
Would someone used to presenting big matches live on Sky see presenting some highlights against a green screen in Salford a job promotion?

Found out this evening that my latest apprentice at work is a Peterborough supporter. I was subjected to mild gloating.

Cates is excellent and as you say, ticks every box. The only thing I think lacking is a bit more sense of humour Linekar style

Alex Scott appears to be the front runner. I’m not a fan, she grates on me and comes across false. Fine (ish) as a pundit but not the anchor role. Chapman is the overwhelming choice for me.

How many people watch MOTD still out of interest? The Goals from the PL are available on apps after the game. Can't say i've watched it in ages personally. I watch the EFL highlights to see our coverage again and whats happening in the division. I appreciate some people can't afford the Sky highlights and maybe older people aren't as tech savvy or have a smartphone. This may end up being a watershed moment for it. Get the wrong presesnters and it will go the way of football focus.
