If they throw into rough on purpose, how can they guarantee hitting the rough side each time?

Doesn't really matter, its a 50/50 chance. They will work hard on one side to keep it shiny, completely ignoring the scuffed side.

A last day bore draw in the end but at least we avoided the 5-0 whitewash this time. Have to leave a woefully out of form Ali out for Sydney and give Crane a go.

That strip could single-handedly kill test match cricket. Smith said as much himself.

Makes you wonder why they prepare it that way. Surely cricket Australia would want a pitch they could win a test on. Having said that, it is good to see some good shots.

Crane in for Woakes for the last test - a spinner at last in the series!

Apparently it was a drop in wicket. A lot of Australia's cricket grounds are used for Aussie Rules. You can't protect the cricket pitch for that and it takes time for it to recover. Supposedly there is only a small window now where the Sydney Cricket Ground's wickets are usable and few cricket matches are played there. They will be under pressure to change to a drop in wicket soon. Perth's new stadium will use a drop in wicket. Could be a long term threat to test cricket. If the quality of test matches declines in Australia it could leave only England where it is still seen as the pinnacle. You don't need wickets that offer so much to the bowlers in short forms of the game. Batsmen have to take risks to score relatively quickly. As we saw on the last day at the MCG that isn't always the case in a test. Looks like we've thrown away a decent position at the death today.

Lords uses "drop in" wickets. They don't have much problem with quality.

The day was ruined for me between Canning Town and Star Lane on the DLR this morning around 8am.

Lords uses "drop in" wickets. They don't have much problem with quality. Have you a source for that? I'm sure that Lords has never used a drop in wicket. I don't think any test ground in England has. No need except at multi-sport venues. Costs a lot of money for a start. There is talk that one could be used at the Olympic stadium.

I went to bed when Moeen edged behind. Wouldn’t have been that long but Curran was quite entertaining. I’ve already had a lifetime of watching Smith wield the willow.

So another winless run down under beckons... Just got to hope we can repay the favour when they come to our backyard.

Just done some research myself, didn't realise they were first used for the Kerry Packer world series in the 70's. Seems they can prepare the pitch to play how they wish it to. Be interesting to see how its laid.
