Only just seen this. Apparently it was a drop in wicket. A lot of Australia's cricket grounds are used for Aussie Rules. You can't protect the cricket pitch for that and it takes time for it to recover. Supposedly there is only a small window now where the Sydney Cricket Ground's wickets are usable and few cricket matches are played there. They will be under pressure to change to a drop in wicket soon. Perth's new stadium will use a drop in wicket. Could be a long term threat to test cricket. If the quality of test matches declines in Australia it could leave only England where it is still seen as the pinnacle. You don't need wickets that offer so much to the bowlers in short forms of the game. Batsmen have to take risks to score relatively quickly. As we saw on the last day at the MCG that isn't always the case in a test. Looks like we've thrown away a decent position at the death today. l Hi Utopia, thanks for that. Just done some research myself, didn't realise they were first used for the Kerry Packer world series in the 70's. Seems they can prepare the pitch to play how they wish it to. Be interesting to see how its laid. Green side up I think even in Australia. Another CB9 postcode

Well at least the one day series has gone better! Nice to beat them. But no real compensation.

Agreed. Very enjoyable hearing us dominate but in the true, great game we only competed in patches.
Bayliss seems to have done his job - which was primarily turning the white ball team into winners - pretty damn well. Just a shame the proper cricket team seems to have gone backwards.
I dislike it but maybe time for different coaching set ups - the teams have diverged already.

It’s been good to watch the last couple of ODI’s, they are good fun and it helps when England are winning!
I always think though that the scheduling of these tours leaves the ODI’s with something of a damp squib feeling to them, what with the serious stuff being over. When I think back to the glorious summer of 2005, which was the first Ashes series during which I was old enough to appreciate the game of cricket itself, let alone the significance of England V Australia, starting with the ODI’s gave them something extra. They really whet the appetite for what was to come and gave those games an extra edge by serving as the build up to a great summer of test cricket.
This way around it just feels a bit “so what” and I know I’m not alone in this, my old man, a cricketing devotee on a level I’ll never reach feels the same. Even the most belligerent, competitive and ready to pom-bash at a moments notice Aussies I knew, when I was lucky enough to be out there for the entirety of the 2010/11 Ashes all said “ whatever, lost the real stuff didn’t we?” when they beat us comfortably in the ODI series that followed.

I dislike it but maybe time for different coaching set ups - the teams have diverged already. I went to see the "Boycott & Aggers" touring show in Aylesbury last night. Both in fine form following the Ashes, and the point you raise above was the subject of a question from the audience. Sir Geoffrey agrees that it is time for a one day coach (Bayliss, why not?) to look after the white ball game and a specialist 5 day coach for the longer format. Asked what was the difference between the fortunes of the two formats, he put it down to money! Too much emphasis on making money in the county game from one day and 20/20 cricket, not enough emphasis on playing for 4 days, building concentration, patience and resilience. Talks a lot of sense does Boycott. Apparently the county clubs are deep in debt - Yorkshire ÂŁ24M, Notts ÂŁ20M. That's shocking for counties who are on the test match/ODI rota. What chance do the likes of Essex or Northants who are small clubs in comparison have to make a profit?

I'm envious Imp - must have been great. I thoroughly enjoy their combination on TMS. Just looked up the tour and Aggers + Tuffers and A + Bumble dates. Now frustrated as can't make any of them!
Didn't know the finances were that bad. Worrying indeed.
Also not entirely sure whether to be worried or massively chuffed that I'm seemingly agreeing with Sir G!

Haven't those two counties just spent a load of money on redevelopments

Not the Ashes anymore but another ODI win for the boys V New Zealand. Should be a competitive Test series against them now too.

Yeah can we at least look like we care when it comes to the test series? And a two test series? What’s all that about after five ODIs and how much other shite since early January?
Doesn’t Bairstow owe us some test runs by the way?
I’m going to start a new thread for next week. Good series developing in S Africa by the way.
