I heard that the Wrestlers are dumping Eagle by the way. Adnams Broadside is always a staple in there too. On another note, the Green Dragon(yes of the 1799 tie) had two Lacons beers on last week(Great Yarmouth's finest) and another one from Hampshire so again music to cambcam's ears.

Just had a fantastic steak at The Alex. Quality meat, cooked perfectly and brilliant value. For £11 I’ve just eaten a delicious piece of Sirloin and couldn’t have asked for more unless I’d gone somewhere really upmarket. Going to have to tell my boss about this, our gaff charges £15 for a significantly smaller piece of Rump. Good to hear. Not much better than good pub food and a decent beer or two. Do you recall the ales that were on? The Alex always seemed a bit hamstrung by being GK but that’s not nearly the issue it used to be it appears. Funnily enough, went to the Wrestlers for food midweek (what a line up of ales in there) and the place was jam packed and very, very noisy. A quick google showed The Cricketers as doing Thai food so headed up there. Gotta say the food was excellent, really really good, but it was GK and there was only ONE ale on, Tim Taylor Landlord I think. It was ok because the evening was about the food but come on, one ale? No wonder the place was nearly empty. Yeah what Animal said, basically. I’d imagine the tenants there are in a position to take advantage of the legislation brought in in 2015, which prevents breweries and pub cos from enforcing a full tie on new tenants, freeing them up to look elsewhere. My boss has been in place for 15 years and if I understand correctly, said legislation doesn’t apply to his arrangement with GK.

Some of you lot must be able to shed light on this one.
So, The Corner House.
For some reason or other, have never set foot in the place. I guess it looks a bit minging from the outside and of course there’s the old GK stigma, but stumbled across the Tripadvisor reviews online and they are very good indeed. It would appear the place has had a bit of a makeover, the photographs of the inside certainly look nice and the menu looks great too and not at all typical GK generic stuff. There’s a reviewer talking about Wadworth 6x so at face value it looks pretty damn good.
There is sometimes little in life as pleasurable as a couple of decent pints of ale and some good pub food and The CH looks to tick those boxes. But it’s also miles away from my prejudiced view (based entirely on never having been in there) so would be interested to hear from those that have been in. What’s with the food and beer, have they shaken off the GK shackles...etc etc?? Thoughts appreciated, cheers.

It did always look a little bit grim from the outside, up to a couple of years ago they really tried as a live music venue but it never really had a great reputation as a venue. Sound techs could be a bit unreliable and the equipment a bit worn but it was alway really friendly. Couple of years ago they started doing food because of the increased trade from the Travelodge and Premier Inn across the road and they're really bloody good at it! I've not eaten there for a while but it used to be really big portions of proper 'pub grub'. The music stopped at the end of last year and they've just had a refit and extension built. It's now really nice inside. I think they're still sort of Green King, so the beers are nothing new, just the usual stuff that rotates round all Green King pubs. I'd definitely say it's worth popping in if you can, although the owner used to not like opening on home game days as football fans caused more hassle than it was worth!

My grandad's old local. Not happy. Do Heineken own that many pubs? First time their property portfolio has really come onto my radar...

Heineken’s UK pub arm is called Star Pubs & Bars and is a subsidiary of sorts. All Heineken owned brands for the most part, if you’ve been somewhere with any combination of Heineken, Amstel, Birra Morretti, Carling or Strongbow on tap, it was probably one of theirs.

I suspected it might involve a sidewing of sorts. My worry is that a swerve in company policy can quickly make pubs 'unviable' (ie. by huge rent hikes) then ripe for the developers to move in. Happened to Brakspears around this neck of the woods.

Happened to Brakspears around this neck of the woods. Oh aye that’s exactly what they do. As soon as they decide they’d rather sell or develop a site for housing than keep it open, the rent goes up, the tentant moves out and the pub closes. Tried and trusted method. Sadly it even works in villages where the locals manage to get a protection order, or have it listed as a community asset. All it takes is for it to sit empty for two years without a new tenant taking it on, (easy to achieve when you demand unrealistic rents and won’t negotiate) and you can usually get any such orders overturned and develop away.

Just a little shout out for Greene King Yarbird.
Plenty has been said about GK but credit where it’s due, this is a lovely beer. First had a pint in some random country pub a couple of years ago and noticed it creeping in to a few more places since. A cracking traditional ale which is everything GK IPA should be but isn’t. Fingers crossed it will be around for a while, we’ve waited long enough.

From the GK website: "The 4% abv pale ale was first introduced as a seasonal ale and takes inspiration from the freedom and energy of American jazz... Using American hops Citra, Centennial and Simcoe, Yardbird has a zesty and tropical aroma, packs a real citrus punch to entice the taste buds... Best described as a light hearted, free spirited beer full of swing..."
This actually describes it quite well. To me it tastes of one of those typically American craft ales that's trying too hard to replicate something European, yet overdoing it with too much of 'something' (in this case hops) such that it lacks subtlety and results in a smack to the taste buds.
Not bad, though, and miles better than GK IPA.
