Everywhere.. that's the idea of quarantine. Stop all non-essential movement. Close the arterial roads, rail etc. Close schools/colleges etc, expect vast majority of people to work from home or not work at all, organise deliveries of essentials to people as appropriate and ban all gatherings for events etc. These measures don't have to last more than a few weeks or a couple of months but could make all the difference in saving lives. The aim in the delay phase is to slow the rate of infection. You can't do this in a namby pamby way. The government need to pull their finger out and be decisive and do their job and protect the people they were elected to serve. I am just not sure how practical that would be. How would you police it? Lockdown hasn’t worked to date in China or Italy. It will be interesting to see if the latest lockdown across Italy will have any effect. I just can’t see people sitting at home for weeks on end. People have a habit of not obeying what they are being asked to do. The government encourages people not to panic buy, so what do people do? The opposite. The sight of a woman walking through my local town with a trolley full of toilet rolls was equally funny but sad. Then of course there is the commercial element of asking businesses to close down for a period. I wish I could come up with a practical solution, but I wonder if lockdown would work in the 21st century. I don't like it any more than you do. It won't stop the spread as people will still go out and consort with each other but there will be imense peer pressure to observe the restrictions and if we all do what we can it will slow the rate of infection and hopefully more lives will be saved. The police do need to be allowed powers of arrest for those that are not given permission to travel out of area. The roads can be blocked easy enough. Have you tried getting on the A14 after 9 pm over the last few weeks. If you need a few 'volunteers' a judge could sentence those XR bods to do road blocks as community service. Lets face it government is going to have to dig deep to deal with this and put money in people's pockets, food on the table and bail outs for businesses. If it doesn't the government will fall because no one will support anything less. Only just over a decade ago UK government rustled up £140 billion to give to the banks and ended up writing off £27 billion of that. Since then the government has added a good trillion to the national debt. They can afford to add another £50 billion or so for a national crisis that is bigger than the credit crunch and the biggest national crisis/event since world war 2. This money should go to real people and businesses to offset financial losses and not into the coffers of Johnson's rich buddies. They are going to have to do all this anyway within the next few weeks so why wait. The cost both in lives and to the economy is going to be more the longer we wait before entering the delay phase. That woman you saw was clearly shitting herself.

More will die from winter flu. Where are you getting this analysis from? I dearly hope you are correct but fear you are wildly wrong.

My sister, who is not political at all, asked the following question yesterday.
'Looks like China and Iran are the countries most badly afflicted by Coronavirus. Do they have anything in common?'
I can really only think of one thing.

Six senior Iranian politicians/religious leaders dead with over 10% of MP's infected, and the Chinese being blamed for it - it's almost too perfect.
Sorry but I don't believe in coincidences.

Preventing citizens in a democracy from going about their legitimate business is a hugely significant step, and we had better know why we are doing it before we attempt to do it. I think the Government is reluctant to do it, and they are right to be. Of course, even if we wanted to impose a lockdown, it is highly unlikely that the armed services together with the police, would be able to enforce it. Look at how both have been cut to the bone. One example: how many traffic police do you ever see?

'If it's just China and Iran, don't you think that would be a bit too obvious?' 'Hmmm, yes, maybe you are right, we'll include a third country. Italy is pretty uncontroversial, they will do' 'And it won't spread to other countries?' 'Well it might, enough to rattle the financial markets, so can make a financial killing too. But there will be a vaccine in a year, no long term damage done' 'Yeah ok, sounds good, let's do it'
Of course, it's more likely that a pangolin ate an infected bat, and a Chinese person ate an infected pangolin. Or something like that.

Reducing the global population whilst reducing the carbon footprint of those that survive seems a bit too convenient I reckon.
That Thunberg girl always did have a shifty look about her. Bet she’s at home in a swivel chair stroking a white cat.
They’ll make a film about it one day, just you see....

My son is in a placement year at the Office for National Statistics in Cardiff.
Just confirmed a positive case in his office.
Feels like it’s getting closer to home.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-51836057Going to be interesting to see what they are told to do here. As jobs go the ONS is a relatively straightforward ‘work from home’ option so should they have been proactive and encouraged that in advance? The BBC website says “the company is taking appropriate steps to protect the well-being of staff” but there’s no official directive to the staff as yet. Sums up how tricky it is for employers, staff and the general public alike. Looks like we’re all going to be between a rock and a hard place, and that could be quite quickly too.
