I'm not sure why people are likening this appointment to Joe Dunne?
Dunne was 44 at the time of his appointment and had been previously manager of Colchester for eighteen months. Derry was only 37 when appointed, but had previously been manager of Notts Co for about eighteen months.
Both these appointments fall for me into the same category of 'some managerial experience, not Cambridge through-and-through'.
Bonner is a different call - he is younger, has no direct managerial experience, but also has never failed anywhere, and is deeply committed to the success of our club.
He may not work out, but surely it has to be worth trying something different after both the Dunne/Derry and more experienced Calderwood approaches have failed?
Good luck Mark, I really hope you make it work...

“Disappointed” “Underwhelmed” “Terrible decision” “This club never fails to astound me” “Absolute shambles from top to bottom”
This is fun. I can't wait to start slagging off all our summer signings...

I was a bit surprised to see he had been given the job after the last 2 defeats. I would have thought we should wait for a while to see how things go given his lack of experience.
Also, the alleged increased budget doesn't mean anything if we just waste it on league 1 has-beens and strikers who can't score again. It's how you spend the money that counts.

Managerial appointments will always polarise people, most of whom have no idea of the process that has been undertaken to make that appointment. Time to ditch the negative, get behind the man and look forward with hope not despair.

Talking of the process , be interesting to know what the process actually was leading up to this appointment. Was anyone actually interviewed?

Of course, unless you were involved, no one will know for sure. But I imagine Rusk was interviewed - why else would he (prematurely) announce his departure from his current job? And I expect Bonner had an "informal" interview - PB suggests that at least in his press release yesterday.

Knibbs and Dallas are here for another season ( we`ll see how much Bonner rates Dallas as surely he will get a couple of starts before the end of the season). Most people seem happy so far with Mullin so I`m sure we`re looking to tie things up with him sooner rather than later. Bigger issue with Sam Smith, I`d think his agent would be looking to get him an increase in cash but the impression I get that he is happy here. Will be good to see him alongside Mullin however as we all know money talks, just look at Salford !

Yes, when we make a dud signing (Keith Keane, Azeez, Slew etc) it hurts us as it takes up a wage. When we were on the way up with Beck, every signing was a good one as far as I can remember. Look at Liverpool, how many bad signings do they make?

‘but also has never failed anywhere,’
Failures have got to start failing somewhere.

Look at Liverpool, how many bad signings do they make? Historically, loads. Even with hundreds of millions to spend. Every football team in the world, from Real Madrid down to Histon will make more dud signings than decent ones.

Liverpool have got their last few signings right, sure (I mean jury is out somewhat on Minamoto and Shaquiri but still).
A few ducks in a row, but it wasn't that long ago Karius and Mingolet were in a battle to be less wank than the other, Charlie Adam was a big summer signing and £55M went on Downing and Carroll.

I give you Bruno Cheyrou and Fabio Borini.

Michael Edwards at Liverpool is the best transfer negotiator since the man who persuaded us to hand over Shaggy and 100k for Devon White.

I think Ben Strang's negotiating the Azeez transfer to Newport runs that close!
