A bit of a side note I know, but I can't believe they buy rubber bullets and tear gas from the UK!

I have a strong feeling that future historians will look back at yesterday's events in Washington and identify them as the moment when Donald J Trump , "leader of the free world" , finally and definitively abandoned all pretence of being a President and openly declared his determination to become a dictator. Clearing a peaceful and lawful protest (which , judging by the fottage , was made up of a large percentage of young women) with rubber bullets , tear gas and flash grenades just moments before he started a speech by defending citizens' rights to..........er.............peacefully protest was grotesque and disgusting enough. But that was followed up by the vomit-inducing sight of him posing in front of a church holding a Bible (upside down , somewhat appropriately) , an act which did at least unite religious leaders of all faiths in their outraged condemnation. What has been far more disturbing and telling has been the subsequent reaction of the Republican Party. Thus far I have only seen two GOP representatives brave enough to say what is blindingly obvious to any observer with an ounce of human decency ; from the rest - approval , silence , or worse still feigned ignorance of the event even happening at all. For a country to truly call itself a democracy , the members of the ruling party , whether it is centrist , of the left or of the right , MUST be able to question their leader's judgement , hold them to account and where necessary stand up and say 'no'. Trump has systematically emasculated the Republican Party , by removing anyone who dares to disagree with him , to the point where it is now no longer a functioning party - it's a personality cult. When you have a man in charge who can no longer be questioned or held accountable by his own party because he's surrounded by sycophantic yes-men you no longer have a Presidency , you have a dictatorship. And history tells us how well they turn out. Citizens of America , truly do we weep for you and your country. Update : Trump 's latest ramblings include tweeting part of a letter from his "Super Star" lawyer John Dowd stating that the peaceful and law-abiding protesters cleared away for his revolting photo-op "were not real." Seriously. I really do wish I was making this stuff up. I may well regret asking this but can he honestly sink any lower? I fear the answer is probably "Yes" BTW - the most succinct and cutting comment yet on the Orange Clown's handling of both the COVID pandemic and the George Floyd protests - "Is America Great Again yet?"

Y'all need to remember, this Presidency is no more than a dangerous vanity project.
The only thing Trump is interested in is his own super inflated ego. Of all the western leaders Trump is the most dangerous, most duplicitous man we’ve seen, those that continue to support him are no better and he will do anything he can to fix the election. He is a dangerous man.

"Defund the police!" They've gone proper nuts in the USA. Who is funding the Democrats now, private security firms? Poorer neighbourhoods will have to resort to vigilantes. The Democrats would walk the November election if they had just chosen someone with a bit of charisma and who didn't raise doubts about their senility. I'd have gone with Tulsi Gabbard but she was too anti-war for the doners/established party.
At least our politics isn't that insane. It looks like some Americans truly want a civil war.
Some of the footage of people literally having their heads kicked in or crying over their businesses being looted and burnt out is heartbreaking. Then there is the ex-cop, who happens to be black, who was shot dead in St Louis. Last I heard nine were dead in the riots but that is a couple of days out of date.

4 hours ago I asked whether Trump could sink any lower. TBF I did think it might take at least a few days so I would like to apologise unreservedly for my naivety.
This afternoon last month's US unemployment figures were released. They showed that whilst the unemployment rate for white workers fell significantly , it rose for their black counterparts. This prompted Trump to proudly boast that today was "a great day for George Floyd!" Yes you did read that correctly. Good ol' George could , according to Donald , look down from on high and smile at more of his fellow African-Americans losing their jobs , whilst watching the inequalities between black and white workers growing ever wider.
So your quiz question for this evening is this - Why , less than 24 hours after George Floyd had been laid to rest , did the President of the United States feel the need to make such a crass , insensitive and downright offensive remark? Is it a) because he's a cretin with a brain the size of an anorexic amoeba who simply doesn't understand primary school level maths b) because he suffers from a form of psychopathic narcissism which prevents him from giving a sh1t about anyone but himself c) because he actually wants to start a race war across the US OR d) all of the above
Answers on a postcard please.............

It's because he's an idiot. The comment starts harmless enough mentioning that "regardless of race, colour gender or creed they have to receive fair treatment. We all saw what happened last week, we can't let that happen" so far so reasonably good just as long as you're naive enough to believe him and ignore some of the vile tweets he put out that exacerbated things.
The "great day for George, great day for America, great day for everybody" comments are beyond stupid. He's at his most dangerously stupid when he goes off script like that.

The Bloods & Crips have now ended their gang violence against each other after god knows how many years
Trump will probably claim credit for this at some point

The first part of overcoming the racial engineering that the US is built on is to stop fighting over the little boat they're in.
Not that it's a problem there alone, although we don't have anywhere near the same divide there are still bountiful race issues to resolve, and hopefully, just hopefully, a few of our more bigoted and proud types in this country will have a good examine of British history and realise that we're the baaaaaaad guuuuuuy. Duh.
Got to love Bristol, aside from being a bunch of rugby twats, for their firm action here. And trip hop. They've done good.

On this day in 1963 the GOVERNOR of Alabama physically prevented two black students from trying to enrol at the University of Alabama. That was in The Times today(p27). That was just six months before I was BORN!

Yup, it's about time to address our record as one of the most notorious, cruel and violent bad guys in history. It promises to be a very humbling experience but one that's neccersary.
Hopefully many more statues to come down. It's the least we can do.

What about the arch racist Winston Churchill. Should we tear down statues of him and airbrush him out of history because he was a racist?
It's one thing to pull down statues in Bristol or Liverpool as those cities were built on the profits from slavery but where do you draw the line?

I’m not sure there’s a widespread clamour to erase history by pulling down statues. In fact, I think the opposite thing is happening; people are drawing attention to facets of history left largely unaddressed. Churchill’s achievements are well documented, his flaws less so. And he had many.

Shall we close down The Guardian, seeing as its predecessor The Manchester Guardian declared it an evil day when Lincoln was elected President and that his time in office was abhorrent?

"Honestly, get a grip."
That suggests you disagree with me on something. Which but was it...that Britain has a violent past? That statues of slave owners and traders should come down?
What makes you say I need to get a grip?
