In any event, a great advert for test cricket. Has anybody seen the viewing figures. I suspect I'm the only one getting up at 3.45 in my stretch of Cambridge suburbia 😏

I have to admit I was getting irate at Root for not declaring but now I’ve had time to think it over, I think batting for time was a reasonable strategy. It’s very easy for us to make armchair decisions but Root and the coaching staff know the effort needed in that sapping heat with a soft ball that isn’t doing a lot. I still think India will do well to chase the total. In a way, if they do, they deserve to win the match as it’ll be a record-breaking chase. The fact they’re one down already and on a pitch which is starting to misbehave will surely give England hope. They just have to hope that Bess and Leach bowl well with the older ball and India take some risks initially and throw their wickets away. Letting that required run rate continue to increase without getting out of control will be key. I think you have to dangle the carrot but keep it just out of reach! Pujara, Kohli and Rahane will likely make or break the Indians and Pant’s innings will be one extreme or the other but there’s no doubt he’s a match winner on his day. I have also been very impressed with Washington Sundar more so with the bat than the ball.
I’m slightly getting ahead of myself here but thinking ahead to the second test, what changes are likely? For India, I feel Rohit is a weak link. He’s contributed nothing with the bat and dropped that absolute sitter yesterday. Why is KL Rahul not playing? Was he injured or out of form? Then there’s the argument for including Kuldeep Yadav but do we think Washington and Nadeem have done enough? As for England - Jos Buttler is going home so will Ben Foakes come in? Swap Anderson with Broad possibly? Jofra is probably safe but I wish he’d contribute with the bat more. He has the talent but never offers anything in red ball cricket with the bat. There’s no doubt he can provide the x-factor with the ball but is that enough?
Only one more early start before a few days off for a lie in. I’m looking forward to the second test already regardless of the result tomorrow. Test cricket - you can’t beat it!

I don't think Archer should be judged on his batting any more than Anderson or Broad should. His place in the team should be based solely on his bowling, the batting should just decide his position in the order. I think Broad should get a go probably, yeah, and I suppose Anderson is the most likely one to miss out.
Foakes for Buttler straight swap. What sort of bat is Foakes, not sure I've ever seen him play? I'd be half tempted to bring in Moeen for Lawrence given that the other two spinners have done enough to retain their places just about (so far). I think of Moeen as a similar bat to Matt Prior, capable of a classy 80 or a dodgy 2. Does Lawrence yet have the nous to get in and stay in? It's tough for an inexperienced player there.

Just a bit annoyed that India couldn't last later into the day - although its always good to get up to see wickets have fallen!

Can we still bring in Broad or not really? Think they will be tempted to keep the same team other than Buttler.
Terrific win.

Who bats at 3 then with Crawley likely to still be out.Root better at 4 and Pope needed at 6 with Buttler not playing ( Foakes not too bad with bat but not Buttler ). Another CB9 postcode

Mooen has batted at 3, 4 and 5 before for England and I wouldn't mind him there but I imagine he would be more likely to appear down the order. I would also be happy with Pope at 3.

Stick with Lawrence. How is Buttler feeling now? Don't really get this rotation thing, it has to be more fluid, surely? Not that Foakes particularly weakens that dynamic, he'll be fine. Yep, Broad for Anderson.
Still disappointed that the Indian authorities saw fit to forego the planned fifth test in iieu of adding another pyjama party to the schedule.

I think we should play five tests against India and SA always.
Buttler has a young family doesn't he? I can imagine the reaction from my wife if I asked to stay for an extra Test, or even out for an extra hour...

Personally I’d like to see Moeen in at 3. Without Crawley, it’s probably our most fluid position and Moeen can bat anywhere in the order. It also gives us another spin option which is never a bad thing especially as Bess in particular seems to be wildly inconsistent. I’d prefer to keep Pope at 6 as that seems to be his cemented position going forward.
Is Ben Stokes fit bowling wise? Did he even complete 10 overs in total? Maybe that was always the plan and he wasn’t needed or maybe Root is managing him. Nevertheless, he’s still a shoe in for his batting.
As for India, I would replace Rohit with KL Rahul. Unfortunately I think Rohit is part of the senior team and they won’t be brave enough to drop him. Rahane is in extremely poor form but I think bought himself time with his leadership in Australia. He makes a far better Captain than Kohli but unless Kohli resigns the captaincy, I can’t see them changing things. Maybe a Nadeem/Yadav swap?
The toss will be crucial on Saturday. I assume the pitch will be very similar to this one just gone (i.e. a road for the first 2-3 days and a rapid degradation on days 4/5).
