You can sometimes make no sense of what someone could be going through on the inside when to everyone else their life on the outside may seem so complete. He was on Football Focus yesterday seemingly very happy about Wales' recent good form and talking enthusiastically about the future.

Stunned at this. A player who I really admired throughout his career. One of the Premier League's greatest players.
As Chris says, I saw him on Football Focus yesterday and for this to have come out 24 hours after that appearance doesn't seem to add up.
RIP Gary.

As a kid growing up right in the thick of the resurgence of Leeds United in the early 90's, Gary Speed was a huge focal point in that LUFC team winning the Division One title. He scored some fantastic goals and was a great player. I have lots of friends who are Leeds fans and they couldn't speak highly enough of him. He was always visiting schools helping out with sports and always visiting local football clubs presenting awards.
For the younger posters on here who can't remember him as a player, check out this youtube video of his finest moments from a great Leeds United side...

Totally shocked, when I saw the headline I thought it must have been some kind of accident as I watched him on football focus yesterday and he seemed very upbeat about the future, but you just never know what actually going through someone's mind.
RIP Gary Speed

Its taken me a few hours to grasp this. I am truly shocked. All i can think about is his poor kids.
I wonder if this is British footballs 'Robert Enke moment'?
Enke was the German first choice keeper going into last World Cup but killed himself 8 months before in 2009. He was suffering from depression and hid it and bottled it all up with disastrous consequences.
Now we don't know what has happened with Gary but i can't help but think the same thing has happened. German footballer is a very different place now with a openess about mental illness. It is treated in the same way as if you had a physical illness or injury. Several players have since come out as being depressed or having had a breakdown and are respected and treated accordingly.
