I have to say that this United side is a desperately poor shadow of the one I was watching this very time 12 months ago. Is it really all about Wessi going? We have never replaced the creativity that both he and Boateng the season before gave us. In fact you could argue the league 2 promotion midfield was better. Bonner clearly doesnt trust Lankester enough to give him a run in the side. In a formation like yesterday's, he should have been playing in behind instead of Knibbs. Knibbs is an honest trier but he's not the creative player the side needs. I would rather Knibbs go wide instead of Tracey who looks shot of confidence and won't take anyone on.

Greg Taylor is not going to be dropped. Noticed he was Captain today over Digby. I just can't see MB dropping his Captain. Another mistake really. Digby is far more vocal and should be wearing the armband for all sorts of reasons. I wonder what Paul Barry is thinking. He paid a fee for Rossi, and Taylor keeps being selected instead and keeps giving away goals. We also paid fees for Janeh & Lankester who dont get regularly picked either.

On reflection they looked Like an Evans team only with some skill. Time and again they left the foot in and in midfield protected their defence by pushing pulling and holding taking it in turn to get booked. Another three of their side should have seen a card of some colour. Found Tracey really frustrating in that he never put a challenge on anyone and indeed both Smith and Knibbs had to do his work for him. Also when given the ball he waited until he had two players with him before starting his runs. He should run early and cut the ball back if our forwards are still catching up.Really is no more than an impact sub for last twenty minutes of games. Simper looks like a player consistently finding a team mate in space. Pity that his great strike was blocked bySmith. Tracey was playing a role that I don't think he has played much before and one that certainly isn't suited to his best attributes. Bonner wanted to try wing-backs and shoehorned Tracey in there because he is one of our most dangerous and exciting players. He never seemed to know what to do yesterday, with or without the ball. I think it's something Bonner got wrong yesterday, although I can certainly see the logic. Were he to go with that formation again I would sacrifice Tracey, use Williams as a wing-back, and play a back three of Jones, Okedina and Rossi. I didn't think Williams looked comfortable at all yesterday, partly due to Tracey and partly due to Bannan, but his distribution was also very poor. He rushed everything.

"I wonder what Paul Barry is thinking. He paid a fee for Rossi, and Taylor keeps being selected instead and keeps giving away goals."
Rossi also gave away a goal when he played. Seems we aren't having much luck at the moment. We've had a few unlucky goals recently.
I would have liked to have seen Williams at right wing back - and Okedina in the back 3. Generally, I think the 3 at the back is something we should persevere with.
As for the lack of creativity, with DIgby and Simper being on the defensive side, surely it would be good to play Lancaster in front of them?
I think Tracey is better off being part of the front 4, than a wing-back.
Time to replace Joe with Feji too - added creativity.

I'm fairly positive after yesterday, looking at the game in isolation.
The 5-3-2 (or variation of) seems worth persevering with and could in time give us more goal threat. I felt for Tracey who seemed completely unsure whether to attack or defend and ended up doing neither - he'll surely improve with more experience in that role. With hindsight putting Williams there was the call yesterday.
What a player Bannan is though - he saw the confusion in our right back spot after 30 seconds and moved out there to cause us damage.
Vale is a big game now to find some confidence. I'm stuck between wanting us to keep the 5-3-2 or returning to a 4-2-3-1. Probably I'd do the former as I feel we need to freshen up the attack a bit.

A quite unremarkable game of football. We were a bit too predictable in the final third and never really had them worried. That doesn’t sound like the kind of thing that would offer much encouragement, and maybe it doesn’t, but I’m certainly not too discouraged after seeing that.
The difference that one win will make in terms of confidence will be huge. I still don’t see this as a team that will be involved in a relegation battle come the end of the season.

I wonder what Paul Barry is thinking. He paid a fee for Rossi, and Taylor keeps being selected instead and keeps giving away goals. I would imagine that Paul Barry is delighted with the progress we have made under Bonner in the last few years and is more than happy to defer first team selection to him. We have to stop living in the past! I’m sure that Barry is far from delighted right now.

Yes we have had a a difficult run of games and still Wycombe and Peterborough away before the end of the month. We have just been too easy to beat.
Going back to Barnsley at home. Has anyone had to really work hard or produce good football to score against us?
So many individual errors, a couple of unlucky deflections etc buy but our confidence looks shot.
For me yesterday only Jones, Brophy and Simper looked like they actually wanted the ball and to make something happen.
There is no shame losing to some of the teams we have but let’s at least make them work for it.

In a strange way I'm slightly encouraged that it's taking individual errors rather than a calamitous team performance to score goals against us.
For me the former should be easier to correct, the latter is an indication of much much deeper problems. Nothing to say the two won't coalesce at some point of course, but for now I think we've generally been quite solid and well organised throughout this recent poor run, even yesterday we rarely looked too troubled.
My biggest concern right now is where the goals and creativity are coming from. Our midfield (including Knibbs) is a little one paced and lacking creativity, our wide players a little too predictable, and our number 9 a little out of sorts.
As above, I'm not too discouraged though. I don't think it will take an awful lot to correct this slump, and I don't think we're doing too much different from the start of the season either.

We don't have a playmaker or box-to-box midfielder; our wing play is non-existent; & our forwards don't get in the game. Our primary final tactical 'pass' is to loop the ball up the middle of the pitch to Iron Joe, who is unsurprisingly knackered & depressed, & has long-since been sussed out by the opposition who routinely put 2 or 3 men on him.
Not that I'm complaining, mind.
