View from another Oxford fan: "In terms of strengths and weaknesses he has great reflexes but a bit of a weakness on long shots, oh and be prepared for plenty of long balls ending up in the stands " Excellent. It'll be like Mitov never left.

Will Mannion's literally never put a foot wrong. Would be gutted for him if this means he's sub keeper again for another season. He's fine, which is perfect for a number 2 but you want your number 1 goalkeeper to have game winning moments too. Port Vale away... made a point blank save and then we went up the pitch and scored.

From another Oxford fan: “He’s a decent shot-stopper but after taking the number 1 spot, he had a few iffy games and lost his confidence, so ended up going out on loan …If he’s regained the form he showed a couple of years back, he’ll be a decent buy (think we’re making space for a new on loan keeper). Not the greatest with the ball at his feet though tbh.”

I trust Bonner absolutely but there’s a small part of me that just wishes less of our signings would come here without a point to prove or a career to rebuild. I also appreciate that’s part of the position we are in, and that more often than not it works out, but I was hoping this rebuild would be based on dead certs. I don’t mean that to sound as negative as it probably does. Don't think it comes across as negative and I understand the observation. Obviously our approach to the 'typical Bonner signing' has got lots to do with budget. But I also think there's a huge part of it around Bonner's lust for proving lots of people wrong by taking such players on and shaping them into really good players. Yes, there have been a few who haven't worked out but his record of realising and releasing the potential of so many players is hugely impressive. And I think fans love it too. Of course what would be hypothetically interesting would be if he did have a sizeable budget, would he go for the same approach or go more along the 'dead certs' route? Anyway, welcome Jack. It's going to be fun.

There are still ?7 signings to be made so plenty of opportunity to sign 'dead certs'. It depends on one's definition of a dead cert of course but I imagine we'll bring in at least a couple with at least the profile of a Williams or Jones when we bought them in.

Negative comments from Vale and Oxford, wait n see I guess. Not sure there are many league one goalkeepers who would get exclusively positive reviews from their clubs' fans. They are all going to have made mistakes, had runs of poor form or been known for poor distribution. He's still young for a goalkeeper and has good league one experience. He won't be faultless but has got to be capable enough. He'll be fine if he has a decent defence in front of him next season.

Come to think of it, so could any of us!

Goalkeeper is such a specialist position I can’t say I’m thrilled with this one.
We finally let go a keeper who in my opinion wasn’t good enough and we bring in one who sounds worse.

Port Vale away... made a point blank save and then we went up the pitch and scored. Oh goodness, Mannion is going to be the new Bennett? Bennett is still the new Bennett until everyone who doubted me on this message board unequivocally apologises and admits they were wrong. It's never too late But in the meantime, seriously - I'd be very happy for Mannion to be our number 1 keeper. I thought it was very harsh that he lost his place in the starting line up when Mitov returned from injury. Mannion looked good with Taylor and Okedina infront of him. Just imagine how he'd have looked with Jones / Morrison and Rennett in front of him...

Agree, Mannion was very unlucky last season. He needs to learn to shithouse more but other than that I thought he was better than Mitov.
That save away at Port Vale he made look simple but it was a great save.

Bit underwhelmed with this one, especially with the mixed reviews from Oxford fans and poor reviews from port vale fans. Personally I prefer experienced keepers especially as the teams going to be in transition this season. I also think there’s better GK options available on a free Connor Ripley and Chris Maxwell for example (Granted maxwell maybe out of budget scope). I hope he’s able to regain his Oxford form and proves to be another trade mark Bonner signing.
