Bet Bonner's fuming that he tried 3 at the back for months last year, without much attacking threat, yet within 15 minutes of Monk trying it the opposition are punting it into their own net for us! Funny old game.

Today we had a bit of luck. It gave us something to defend. This was a bit like the Wycombe result last season. Hopefully give us a bit of confidence which makes all the difference. Mannion is far better Jobe made big difference Gas coming on was a game changer Shame everyone else won. Lincoln got past Oxford and Stevenage into the play-off bracket because neither of them won. We really should make note of the ways Lincoln have improved their income to bid higher for players. LED advert boards may be gross, but they make money. I'm not too bothered about how other teams do when we win. It only really matters when we don't. There are still a few winnable matches ahead of us. If Kaikai and Lankester could shoot more accurately, we would be devastating.

Monk certainly deserves praise for yesterday but we will never know if we’d have got that same kind of performance/result had we not had the international break. Also would Jobe have played had Morrison been fit, same with Mannion/Stevens. It’s all irrelevant really as everything came together and we deservedly won against the type of team we’ve struggled against since we’ve been in this division.
Crucial we now back this up on Monday. Cheltenham recently put a winning run together, Port Vale have won their last two, our turn to show we’re capable of stringing a few positive results together. Was impressed that Monk was already focused on Monday in his post match interview, as he rightly said, if we lose to Wigan then yesterday will count for nothing.

But I do remember Bonner talking about the extended lockdown break we had and how it gave him time to reset and then build a squad that went on to get promotion. Monk seems to have used this break to re-think things. Barnsley also had that break but seem to have done nothing to reverse their slump.

Funny old game. His back 3 did include Greg Taylor & George Williams at CB with Okedina as wing back so maybe that’s why it failed!

Rennett/Morro/one other with Lennett/Brophy as wing backs, not drastically different. Only a tongue in cheek point anyway!

Monk has presided over our best and worst league 1 results for two seasons, and arguably since we've been in league 1. And he's only managed 4 games. Interesting times.

Maybe Portsmouth away in 21/22 or Ipswich away the same season as our best in league 1. Cheltenham away as our most complete performance.
Comfortably our best this season though, yeah.

Think Ipswich for the local significance, I mean we'll be telling our hypothetical grandkids about pink jacket man!
But beating Wigan away when they were in the title run in probably does it in 'pound for pound quality faced' terms.

I think after the last 2 away games Monk had to do something to make us more solid defensively. Playing wingbacks gives us that, especially if they sit in. There were a couple of instances where we got overloaded out wide on both flanks for dangerous crosses into the box, mainly in the first half. But credit to the work that both Bennet and Gibbons did, plus the midfielders in front of them to shut down the space for Barnsley. We really put a shift in all across the pitch. Yes we rode out luck at times, but so did they, I don’t believe the header from the corner should have been disallowed, I think the refs seen the keeper fall over theatrically and given it for that, even though no one touched him. Kaikai blazed at least 3 great chances over the bar. As the game fizzled out we got into some very good positions where a better pass or more awareness would have seen us potentially in with a chance. Plus the addition of Gassan made a massive difference. Overall it was a perfect away performance, frustrated them, had some luck and managed to take one of the chances that came our way. The test for this formation is going to be at home, with 2 fullbacks as wingbacks we may not be as attacking as we would like to see. Another positive from yesterday is that it looked like everyone was up for it, I think we’ve had some recent games where half the side just didn’t look interested to me.

Think Stevens definitely has a place and I'm fine with him being here next season, but him and Mannion could definitely be rotated better. Agreed that I don't think either is good enough to be first choice and can see them both getting 20-25 games next season if Mannion chooses to stay, rather than one being first choice with the other as cover. Wouldn't be surprised if Mannion leaves though, I can see him being first choice for a club in League 2. That's really the only reason I'd want to see us bring in a new keeper as while its somewhere we definitely can improve, I don't think it's the most urgent area to do so in and would rather we spent elsewhere. What hasn't Mannion done to convince you he's league 1 quality? He's done so much right whenever he's started for us. He hardly ever puts in a bad performance and believe he more than deserves to be someone's first choice keeper. Can't see what he's lacking to be a league 1 keeper for us. Looking back on my first post and feel I've been pretty harsh on Mannion there. He's reliable at this level and he's shown up in big games. He's also improved hugely in his time here so there isn't really any reason he couldn't have the starting role, it's more that I feel both him and Stevens have their qualities and can both perform for us and considering we have Stevens contracted for another season, if we find a way to balance play time between them, we can get more out of both than just having one. The comment about him leaving for League 2 is more because I feel it's more likely that a club there will be willing to offer him a starting place than a League 1 club as while he's good enough, I'm just not sure he's played enough to be on many radars although I may very well be wrong.

The goalkeeper situation is a contentious one, both are capable keepers, but Stevens was brought in as No1, and has been trusted by all 3 managers to hold that position. Mannion now has the chance to keep the jersey until the end of the season, which if he performs as well as he did on Friday, he should do that.
I see some very clear similarities to Dimi and Callum Burton, at the end of that season it was Burton who was released, wonder if the same will happen this time?

Cheltenham away as our most complete performance. Really? Oh wait. THAT Cheltenham performance. Not the one I was thinking of then.
