Nor did he play right back after the group stages. I think the system of having one of the wing backs really high in Saka made things really hard for Walker so not really a surprise he had a disappointing tournament, but as I've said previously he was a victim of his own qualities as it would be mental to play that way with any other player in that position with responsibility for so much of the pitch.

Uefa have announced their team of the tournament. One England player in it. Kyle Walker. I’m serious. Who else would you suggest? No one springs to mind Pickford and Guehi over Walker. But also wouldn't have been surprised to not see anyone from the England side included. Seen a lot of Walker revisionism in recent days. Ultimately he's been a great player at club and international level, one of the world's best in his position. This season hasn't been his best though and he shouldn't have started ahead of Trent in this tournament.

I think they probably felt that they had to pick one player from us as finalists & the dart landed on Walker. He had some decent moments but overall I thought he didn’t bring his A game to the tournament like quite a few of our so called world class players

Are you suggesting Kyle Walker was the best right back in the tournament? He had a shocker. Just look at the goals we conceded. No, I was thinking that you thought we should have had more players in the 11. God no!!

No, I was thinking that you thought we should have had more players in the 11. God no!! On the basis of reaching the final you would have expected at least 2-3 players to make the team of the tournament but there was no real consistency amongst our top players. The only ones who enhanced their reputation were the ones who had limited playing time like Palmer & Watkins. Bellingham had 2 special moments but not a lot in between

From what I saw of it only six Spanish players is scandalous!

Stones and Guehi were my stand out players, mostly solid defensively and tried to spark attacks at times, albeit not often enough.
I guess adding Walker was an acknowledgment that the team in the final should have one player in the team!

But he more than made up for that with some last ditch tackles, IMO England's player of the tournament and should be a guaranteed starter for us moving forwards. Pickford didn't do much wrong either. Palmer would likely have been up there if he'd been given more minutes...

Be interesting to see if Ben White now makes himself available. Mixed feelings on that. He would be very handy to have in a squad..but you either want to play for your country or you don’t.

In all the press coverage yesterday after Southgate’s announcement I read somewhere (can’t remember where) that with Holland gone, White may well come back on the scene. As you say, mixed feelings really.

He didn't screw up any of the short stuff but it wasn't "progressive" just 'will do' balls to defenders. He's certainly got a boot on him but that clip of Walker's throw backwards that ended up with Pickford booting it for a Spain goal kick sums it up.

Fair point on the kicking Dylan, I was more thinking some great saves and punches clear and not sure you could blame him for any of the goals we conceded.

Yeah, some decent saves, handling and punches. I guess I'm hoping that a superb, complete package keeper can emerge for England.
Most important position on the pitch innit.

Ramsdale is the best 'complete package' goalie we've got for now, I think. Pickford is better than him at other traditional goalie stuff though.
I'm hoping Trafford gets a move or a good run of games for Burnley this year because I think he's probably the one looking to emerge.
Pickford is ace though. I love a bit of controlled crazy in my goalie.

And yet Ramsdale not just good enough with his feet by Arteta!
