Let’s hope CC is an Abbot & St Edmunds equivalent then! I wonder if you can get JHB at L ondon Rd then, Rico? 1/2 Abbot + Bottle of St Edmund = BRAIN DAMAGE 80's night out heaven. Ha Ha. You beat me to it-just about to post about Brain Damage. A few pints of that followed by a kebab at the Bosporous on Mill Road. Now THAT was living.

I’ve seen St. Edmunds on a few occasions, but can’t remember where. The Robin Hood I think.I just can’t get on with GK at all, it’s all shite, although, I seem to recall their Mild was bloomin’ gorgeous. Must be donkeys years since I had a pint of that. Anyone know if that’s available anywhere? Cambcam, The XX Mild is indeed bloody gorgeous and available in spades in the Free Press. Very popular too. MAY still be in the Portland too.

I had a Green Devil IPA in the Alex yesterday, only been to this pub once before, seemed ok (not quite the Kingston) but the beer was lovely.
I'm led to believe one of the Oakham owners was raised in the Fulbourn/Teversham area so, if true, becoming a P*sh fan can only be down to some dodgy parenting.
I asked the guys at Calverley's last year if they'd consider approaching Utd, not sure they could commit unfortunately. Think it'd be a great opportunity for both parties.

Y’know I reckon the last time I was in The Free Press was the day we played Ipswich in the 1-1 draw. Bloody hell, where does the time go? But upon reflection, it probably makes sense. I very, very rarely go to the pub just to drink beer. (Nothing wrong with that I might add). It almost always involves food, with good beer being a very important part of it. The talk of GK XX Mild has though got me thinking. It would be a very pleasant thing to wander up to the Free Press and enjoy a pint or two, and simply appreciate the beer for what it is. That is one New Years resolution sorted out. Cheers!

An excellent combo indeed. However, I do marginally prefer their Citra and Green Devil offerings, both of which are available on the other side of Mill rd, at The Live & Let Live, which I also marginally prefer to The Kingston. Their Bishops Farewell is a regular at The Champ and is also delectable. Side note, about 10 years ago my older brother was going out the owner of the brewery’s daughter. Case loads of their stuff regularly turned up unannounced at our house. I’ve not spoken to him, since the selfish bar steward ditched her for some unfathomable reason. What’s the verdict on the Live and Let Live? That’s another place that slipped off my radar donkey’s years ago. I drove past about 6 months ago and honestly did a double take to see if the place was derelict or still open. I know it has been held in very high esteem by some but it looked as rough as a badgers arse. Maybe that’s part of the charm? I dunno. What’s it like on the inside? I know this is a thread about pubs and beer and don’t want to get too sidetracked with food, but any opinion on the food there? Would like to give that a whirl once again but from the outside at least doesn’t look like a place you would trust to serve either decent food or beer. What’s the verdict - don’t judge a book by its cover?

I know I sound like a stuck needle but is there a better combination out there? Just got back to Sheff after a weekend visiting family. We were in The Kingston on Friday. The North Riding Mosaic Pale Ale was lovely. Great Pub. Calverly's brewery also had some top notch beers on.

CambCam, re Live & Let Live, last time beer was superb but I recall, I think, no ‘wet’ food available. Alan Kilker used to run it for a bit but drives taxis now, like most Cambridge blokes it seems! By the way, the food in the FP is top notch too to make your next visit there a well-rounded one.

Would like to give that a whirl once again but from the outside at least doesn’t look like a place you would trust to serve either decent food or beer. What’s the verdict - don’t judge a book by its cover? I’m a big fan. You definitely won’t get any trouble in there, if that’s something you were concerned about, given it’s outward appearance. It doesn’t do food, which much like The Champ is part of it’s charm. It’s unashamedly a drinkers pub. It does look very run down from the outside, but the inside looks a lot better IMO. I suppose it depends what you like. Some might view the old school wood panelling as tatty, maybe even in need of a refurb, but I love it. I see the place as a throwback to the days before every other pub was a a near identical Greene King managed house, with the same beer and the same food everywhere. If you’ve been somewhere like The Duke of Cambridge, which to me feels completely devoid of any character, or atmosphere, The Live is the antidote to that. The beer is always excellent, Oakham Citra and Green Devil are always on and are very well kept and served, plus a couple of ever rotating guests. It’s also the kind of place where there’s no music or TV and people sit around and talk to each other, whether they’ve met before or not.

Thanks for the thoughts on the Live and Let Live. Must say it does sound my sort of place.
As mentioned food tends to influence pub visits these days, but it is good to read of a pub that concentrates on the basics but does them so right.
I’m always wrestling with my conscience with the food thing - a pub is a pub. Not a restaurant. I don’t like the gentrification of pubs and the whole gastro thing. But I like eating in them. They tend to have decent food and a civilised clientele. Good beer, good wine and nice surroundings. They are warm, comfortable, and the sort of places you can take your wife or your parents. It’s all just very, very pleasant. But they can just feel a little bit.... false. But I can’t stand grubby drinking holes and pubs with crap beer either. You know the ones, most of which have closed down now anyway. Something seems to be going wrong somewhere. I suppose that brings us back to the Kingston and why it sits superbly somewhere in the middle.
So, will definitely make an effort to get to the Live and Let Live. Perhaps it is the perfect antidote. Perhaps pubs themselves are ready to go full circle. Maybe it’s just me. I don’t know, I’m a bit confused.
Anyway, on that note, will just say cheers and a Merry Christmas everybody!

I Remember a lad dying in the late 70's early 80's after falling off Newmarket Road Railway Bridge, it said in the C.E.N he had drunk 5 Pints of Brain Damage

Do not confuse the "New" St Edmunds on draught which is just some oldshite that GK had plumbed in from a Urinal in Bury St Edmunds, with the real deal bottled thing of beauty.

Ahh I see, got it, that’s exactly what I was doing.
Must admit I thought it was a bit strange people reminiscing so fondly about St Edmund(s) so it makes sense now.
The Abbott/Edmund Brain Damage thing though must’ve passed me by in the 80’s. More a lover than a fighter.I was all mullets and perms and lager tops. Was a good job I could run quickly.....
