About the only thread worth reading on here at the moment! Can we get a good pub guide based on the league 2 clubs?

I think GK have various set ups. Some pubs are purely GK and pretty much only sell their own stuff with a couple of odd guests and then other landlords are given much more free choice. The Alex is definitely one the best of theirs in town and The Grain Store for all its faults generally serves some different beers you wouldn't normally see in one of theirs. For me my top three pubs at the moment are probably The Devonshire Arms, The Kingston and The Earl of Beaconsfield. Honourable mentions to The Waterman, Blue Moon and Cambridge Blue Only realised on my visit to The Alex that The Hopbine is also GK, which I'd never have guessed with the selection of rotating ales and pretty decent pub-grub on offer. Blue Moon is ace, not too aesthetically pleasing externally - see Live and Let Live.

The people running it have done a good job giving it a unique feel. And yes, a good call on the food too. A year or so back my wife and I were walking past midweek on the way somewhere and decided to nip in and have a swift beer and a bite to eat. Ordered a couple of mains and they unexpectedly handed over a bottle red which on that particular day of the week was gratis. Lovely food and very drinkable wine and 20 quid all-in. Amazing. Something very honest about The Hopbine. Must make more of an effort to get there more often too.

My old man was in the police he took the finger prints of a poor chap who had to many pints of brain damage and proceeded to jump in front of a train

I have a PELLE card which gives me 10% off all draught beer and 20% off a bottle of wine at The Alex , The Hopbine and The Portland. Invaluable for either Pre Radio, Mid-shopping or Pre\during\post gig drinking.

For me my top three pubs at the moment are probably The Devonshire Arms, The Kingston and The Earl of Beaconsfield. Honourable mentions to The Waterman, Blue Moon and Cambridge Blue That got me thinking: # 1 The Geldart/The Kingston # 3 The Salisbury/The Petersfield (There’s something about The City Pub Company’s business model and they way they seem to tell you what you want and know you better than you know yourself that makes me uncomfortable and desperately want to hate it. Try as I might, I just can’t. Just another sheep after all. Honourable mentions to: The Standard/Queen Edith/Cambridge Blue (The Blue should be much higher but I just don’t quite get ‘it’. Maybe it’s the seating, or something like that, I dunno.) The Burleigh, The Hopbine, When in town: The Mitre The Cambridge Brewhouse (Love the place, the food, but the beer, Kings Parade, Lazy River etc.. always disappoints) Places that have slipped off the radar and would like to make an effort to get to more frequently this year: The Alex, Live and Let Live, Free Press, Panton Arms (review anyone?) The Clarendon (review anyone?) The Old Spring (review anyone?) and definitely The Castle which is worth an Uber. Each to their own of course but those are my simple thoughts fwiw.

Preferred the Clarendon from ages ago when it was dark and dingy. See also for The Bath.Showing me age!! Have seen JHB on a bit in the castle , but never seems a patch on that at the Kingston.

Why does the Cambridge Blue try to pretend not to have a front to the pub when you walk in and usher you down the side/back? Don't get that. Stark contrast to the Kingston, and others. The food is very good at the Royal Standard although I'm still a little uncomfortable with the layout, feels like they could have made more with the space available when they did the refurb, over three years ago now, blimey. I'm biased mind, it was my local in the 1980s! Two bars, a bottle and jug and the piano playing. And a decent beer garden then. And run by that old stalwart, and massive Utd fan, Arthur Cooper. I probably shouldn't mention the Tolly beer though...

Flying pig next to the old bus station used to be Tolly.
Can't recall what it was called back then.

Flying pig is still a cracking boozer. One of the best kept secrets in town (from the yoof) it is a cracking boozer. But what was it's original name?
