Ahh I see, got it, that’s exactly what I was doing. Must admit I thought it was a bit strange people reminiscing so fondly about St Edmund(s) so it makes sense now. The Abbott/Edmund Brain Damage thing though must’ve passed me by in the 80’s. More a lover than a fighter.I was all mullets and perms and lager tops. Was a good job I could run quickly..... Where I come from back in the 80's it was all about snake bite 1/2 pint of cider and 1/2 pint of lager

Are there any decent curry houses on route back to the station?
Failing that, can anyone recommend a boozer that does food and will show Liverpool v Arsenal?

Prana is really nice, a notch or two up from your typical curry house. It is noticeably more expensive than others so be prepared for that, but if you are not too bothered about watching the pennies it is worth it. Can’t comment on Pipasha as never been, but it does seem highly regarded for sure. As for the pub option, can only think of the Dobblers. The food is very basic - pizzas, lasagne etc (in fact sometimes only pizzas if busy) but it’s ok and the beer is decent (Charles Wells). They’ve got several good quality large screens too so you can always follow the game properly. If you’re ok with a no-frills beer, food and football sort of place, it ticks the boxes.

We had a decent curry in Prana, thanks for the recommendation. Sampled some lovely beers in the Kingston, Geldart and Cambridge Blue as well.

Currently enjoying a pint of Oakham Inferno in The Alex. Haven’t been in before, but I was walking past and spotted the logo on the pump through the window. Have been enjoying the bottled version over Christmas, so felt obliged to give the cask a try and it’s top notch.

Odd bunch in the Alex (especially about 9pm on a Sunday ) but always top beer.

After reading your post I had a look online and their site steered me to the Untappd app where you view the ales on offer in real time. Quite a cool little app that. That’s another pub back on the visit list.

For my sins, I actually work in a couple of GK pubs currently, whilst they will all have IPA and either Abott or Old Speckled Hen on draught as ‘house’ beers, they will also all have atleast two guests on which can come from anywhere. I make a point of avoiding GK pubs if I can help it, but they aren’t all terrible all the time.

I make a point of avoiding GK pubs if I can help it, but they aren’t all terrible all the time. I think I was scarred by the GK memories of every pub just having IPA, Abbott and ‘Moorland’ Old Speckled Hen. It then seemed GK were buying up smaller breweries, transferring production to Bury St. Ed (closing the original breweries down and making people redundant in the process) and then dressing those beers up as guest ales. I don’t know how true that was/is, but they were dark times and I could barely bring myself to go into a GK boozer for those reasons. Anyway, (you might be able to enlighten me) but times seem to have changed. I’ve been in a couple of GK pubs fairly recently and they’ve had some decent ‘guests’ on. I mean, real guest beers, not fancy handpump labels of obsolete breweries with ‘Brewed in Bury St. Edmunds by Greene King’ in tiny print at the bottom of the label kind of stuff. I’m desperately hoping it means GK are waking up to the dangers of their closed shops and are allowing their pub managers to broaden their horizons to get the punters in. That would be bloody fantastic if it is the case??

I think GK have various set ups. Some pubs are purely GK and pretty much only sell their own stuff with a couple of odd guests and then other landlords are given much more free choice. The Alex is definitely one the best of theirs in town and The Grain Store for all its faults generally serves some different beers you wouldn't normally see in one of theirs.
For me my top three pubs at the moment are probably The Devonshire Arms, The Kingston and The Earl of Beaconsfield. Honourable mentions to The Waterman, Blue Moon and Cambridge Blue
