So, last night was gutting and the new season still feels ages away. Naturally the best thing to do is think about how we can win the 2026 World Cup!
I am grateful to Southgate for joyful moments the last four tournaments have brought, and I think he'll see us through the Nations League games coming up... he isn't about to get sacked and he isn't the type to walk from his contract... but I think he'll announce at some point in August that he will step down when his deal runs out at the end of the year, leaving the FA until the WC qualifiers in March to appoint a successor.
Who would your preference be?
I've left Southgate as an option, should anyone's preference be to stick rather than twist. And I've added the guys who seem to be the obvious candidates.
My personal vote goes to Carsley because, unlike most of the other candidates, he's actually won something. And the U21 Euros is not to be sniffed at, it's a serious tournament, featuring a lot of the players who will form the backbone of our national team int he coming years. Other countries promote from within, so why not.
The candidate I'd steer a thousand miles from is Mourinho. He was finished in 2016. Seeing him managing in Turkey is almost sad.
I've left off Klopp and Pep because they're never going to happen!
What do people think?

I think one of the main gripes about Southgate was "no Plan B"?

I would go all out for Marcelo Bielsa, never happen though.

Was reading a BBC article earlier about how Pardew and Bruce were serious contenders when Southgate took charge. We’ve come a long way since then.
I think Southgate will go immediately. It wouldn’t surprise me if he already informed the FA of his intentions before the tournament started and plans are already in place. Time will tell.
I like Postecoglou but can’t see that happening this time round. I think it will be Potter or Howe. Safe pair of hands. Whoever it is will have a tough job because expectations are as high as they’ve ever been due to Southgate’s reign.

Torn on this one. Always been a Southgate fan despite his clear and obvious weaknesses.
I think this is a good time for him to go – only improved in fact if we'd won yesterday – & wouldn't be upset to see him do so, but by the same token if he's still in charge going into the World Cup... I think I'd be pretty alright with that too.
Agree with Dan that I think Southgate's already decided though anyway. Probably decided before the tournament and can't see the FA's appeals changing his mind. He has the air of a man who's kind of had enough & is hankering for a change.
As for a successor.... I really don't know. Which is probably also partly why I'd be happy enough to see him continue. There's no standout or obvious candidate.
Of the realistic ones listed, I think Carsley & Potter (in that order) are the only ones that really make any sense to me. Pochettino too would be a very interesting one but I can't see him wanting it & if he weren't recently out of a job there's no chance he'd ever be in this conversation.
I like Howe & rate him as a manager, but I feel the way he works wouldn't suit international management (not that they're in the conversation eitherbut ditto the likes of Guardiola & Klopp).

Potter or Carsley. You need your head checked if you want Southgate to take us to the next tournament, only made it to the final through individual brilliance

Eddy Howe is option three. No-one makes the final just on individual brilliance.

How good were Potter’s Brighton? I can’t really remember much about them pre-Di Zerbi… I seem to remember they regularly underperformed against their xG, but maybe that would be less of an issue with the attacking players we have.
He feels like he’d be best placed to continue the culture / man management stuff that Southgate got so right - whether he’d deal as well with the press scrutiny feels a bit up in the air after his time at Chelsea. He feels a bit boring / underwhelming… which might be a good sign, as that’s exactly how I felt about Southgate 8 years ago, and that turned out alright.
Feel like Potter might be more likely to oversee the necessary tactical development than Eddie Howe, for example.

I don't rate him but anyone is preferable to Southgate to me

I’d be happy with Carsley or Howe. Both seem to be good coaches (not just good managers) and seem pretty switched on. And they’d be likely to continue the work Southgate has done rather than overhauling it.

Just out of interest ElG, why don't you think he'd want it? (you may well be right of course!). His professional and personal life seems very anglo-centred and, since the Spurs job, his club management record is a little underwhelming. EDIT: I had to check back that he'd left Chelsea....such a long summer and so much to forget.....

Think he still will want to prove himself in club management. Plus he's Argentinian & has made a very big thing before of the fact he could never manage Barcelona as an Espanyol man or Arsenal as a Spurs one.

Imagine the fallout if the FA appointed an Argentinian as England’s manager…
