Problem is the FA wanted Southgate to stay, if they are that blinkered can they be trusted to get the new appointment right? Be interesting to see who wants Southgate as their manager if that's the path he chooses. Would the pro-Southgaters want him in at their club? I'm sure his media skills and man management have improved but tactically and game management wise he learnt nothing in 8 years. Yes we are regularly progressing further in tournaments but .... I might even bet the Union Jack I've never owned on a mid-table finish. I think that's called contradicting yourself ....and what a Union Jack has got to do with the England national team ...? I despair....

Cambridge games are a degree more entertaining than England's tournament was pre semis. I also expect different things from a team with Paul Digby and Jordan Cousins in midfield to a team with Jude Bellingham and the rest of our midfield talent As much as I dislike Jordan Cousins as a footballer, he is definitely less of a sponge than Bellingham is. I'll take that!

Kane stiffled our ability to press up field Oh dear, looks like those years at the County between 71 and 76 were wasted, actually the typo sums it up better than the correct spelling

He'll get it permanently presuming the next few months go well.

He'll get it permanently presuming the next few months go well. Is that a depressing thought? I guess it will depend on whether the fans buy into what his plans are, based on performances. Would be quite a cheap option you would think, but is that a good thing?

If he can get them winning and playing good football while doing it then who cares.

I'm pretty happy with this. He's proven with the under 21's that he suits international football, can play an attractive style AND that he can win tournaments so I'm on board with it. Hopefully the next two games go well and he can lead us into World cup glory.
Hopefully it means nothing changes with regards to the character and unity of the England squad, something Southgate was excellent at, but that we push on tactically and evolve our style a bit.

I'm not saying it is, I was asking the question. But I can see some pointing to the lack of previous relevant experience at that level, both in club and international football. Managing an U21 International side is not the level of the full side. No real pedigree as a club manager at any level either.
If he was given the job permanently, it could be seen as the FA taking the easy route, promoting from within their own system, which hasn't brought the main prize, despite the undoubted progress Southgate made. Will he be another from the same mould, or will he be prepared to stamp a different mark on the team?
One thing is sure, if he does well, he will be in prime position.

Glad he's got a chance to pitch a claim for it.
I like Eddie Howe, not so much Potter, but neither has ever won anything relevant to the England manager's job.
Carsley has.
