Pretty gutted but not unexpected I am afraid. Fair play to England for coming back so strongly after Trent Bridge.

Good win in the end. Just goes to show every team collapses now, So is it down to poor batting? Good bowling? Or are the pitches to bowler friendly? I still put it down to the introduction Of to much white ball cricket.

So this next one is to be Cook's last test. Unsure what to say really, (aside from thanks for the memories!) as on runs alone he could have been dropped some time ago had he been anyone else. Biggest issue going forwards is obviously the lack of obvious replacement, especially as Jennings is on thin ice. I'd have probably asked him to take the winter off and reconsider in the spring but then are three tests against Sri Lanka and one against Ireland anywhere near enough to be confident either way in a new opening partnership ahead of the ashes?

Has to go down as a legend, for sheer weight of runs scored, and on some tricky occasions. Time is definitely right for him to step down though, based on his form.
The bigger problem is that there's no-one solidly making runs in the county game who you'd be confident could step up to anchor the top of the batting. The ECB have ripped the a*se out of the four day county game, so they're largely to blame for that. All longer forms of the game these are condensed into the rubbish weather at the start of the summer, and a few weeks at the end. Far too emphasis on the short game for me.

If a thousand per cent existed Mike, I’d agree with you 1,000%! Going to Chelmsford today to see the (probable) champions elect. If I’m honest I’d prefer Somerset but both still wear proper jumpers so not so fussed!

Don’t forget three in the Windies too. Personally I don’t think Cook should play again. As the ledge says himself, there’s nothing left in the tank. Could have been Burns up on his home ground as a starter for ten?

I couldn't find any refrence to a series against the Windies when I was wondering how many matches we had between now and next summer. Odd. Anyway I dare say you are right, if he feels like he's done and there's nothing left it's not for anyone else to disagree.

Yes, Barbados, Antigua and then St Lucia, late January through until mid February and then a load of short form stuff.
